That's about it for us, folks -- Dana and I are going to rhythmically squirm to pop music for a while. Thanks for joining us, and stay tuned for hands-on impressions of everything we've seen today!
Dana Wollman 3:07 PM
Demo's a little loud for my old-person tastes, but the acoustics are clearly very good. Bill Graham is a concert venue, after all.

We're told there are two hands-on experiences for us to see today. Obviously, we'll be on that very shortly.

Cook seems to be summing up everything we've seen, ranging from WatchOS 2 to the iPad Pro to Apple TV to the new iPhones. Not sure there's anything else new today.

Live Photos and Retina Flash also get prime billing in this short ad.
Dana Wollman 3:02 PM
The 3D Touch app-switching feature gets some prime screen real estate in the ad. And hey, Bill Hader's in the ad too.
  • Chris VelazcoApple loves Bill Hader, confirmed.

What we're seeing now is one of presumably several new iPhone ads that will be coming soon to a TV near you.

Dana Wollman 3:00 PM

At this point in the presentation, we're zooming back out for a recap on specs: 3D Touch, new "7000 series aluminum" alloy, Retina Flash, a new 12-MP main camera, Live Photos, A9 chip, etc.

Dana Wollman 2:56 PM
Oh ho: a new app that makes it easy to move from Android.
  • Dana WollmanSnap.

Of course, this comes with some new developer APIs. Facebook is already on it: It's coming out with an iOS app later this year that features Live Photos.
Image uploaded 2:55 PM
Dana Wollman 2:55 PM
And this is cool: You can set a Live Photo as the watch face on your Apple Watch.
Image uploaded 2:55 PM
Dana Wollman 2:54 PM
So how do you take Live Photos? Well, this feature is on by default, accompanied by a new icon at the top of the camera interface screen as well as a yellow "Live" button. Basically what's happening is, the camera is extending capture a few seconds after your finger hits the shutter.
Image uploaded 2:54 PM
Dana Wollman 2:54 PM
Swipe through your photos in the Camera Roll, and you'll see little glimmers of motion too.

Dana Wollman
2:53 PM
Live Photos can have sound too.
Dana Wollman 2:53 PM
3D Touch comes into play once again, this time with photos. What we're seeing is a feature called "Live Photos," where you can force-press to see motion in the photo. Think: water ripples in a shot of a lake.

What's new here is that the TrueTone flash is coming to the front side -- sort of. The phone uses the Retina display as a flash, in a feature called "Retina flash." What's happening is the display lights up 3x brighter when you need to use it as a flash.
Dana Wollman 2:50 PM
The front-facing camera has been upgraded too. Five megapixels.

What we're seeing now are some sample shots taken with the new camera, and hopefully we can get some of those into the liveblog, though you kind of need to be here to fully appreciate them. (We'll need to spend more time with the camera, but at first glance, the shots look crisp with vibrant colors.)
Dana Wollman 2:45 PM
But, Schiller says, the goal was to add pixels without degrading quality. Peer inside, and the sensor has 50 percent more pixels, including 50 percent more focus pixels.

Dana Wollman 2:44 PM
In addition: second-gen Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
Dana Wollman 2:43 PM

For those of you who don't know, the Bill Graham Auditorium is a big concert venue, and it's the first time Apple's held a keynote here as opposed to, say, the Moscone Center or its own campus in Cupertino. So far, though, it's what you'd expect: a stage, with a big, glowing Apple logo, and rows and rows of people who elbowed the bejesus out of each other to get in here.
  • Dana WollmanWhich is crazy, because it's stadium seating, and no one really has a bad seat.

It's early September and Apple's invited us to one of its famous keynote addresses out in California, and that can only mean one thing: a new iPhone. (Or two, even, if you ask nicely.) And if the rumor mill is to be believed, we may see way more than just a new handset: anything from a refreshed, pricier Apple TV to a supersized iPad Pro. Of course, the rumor mill has steered us wrong in the past, so we don't really know if there'll be an Apple TV, new iPads or a new 4K iMac. But if nothing else, we know this for sure: There will be iPhones. Bookmark this liveblog link and come back today at 1pm ET for the full blow-by-blow.
