Apple WWDC 2012 liveblog!

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
It won't spin up your fans, "goes easy on your battery" and is compatible with 2nd Gen Airs and the new MacBook Pro. Seemingly not the other MacBooks, though...
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Your mac will now update itself and sync itself when it's offline. When it's charging it'll backup itself!
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
"We all love using our Macs, but wouldn't it be great if when we weren't using them they were still working for us?"
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Okay, a new feature called Power Nap...

He just showed off the new voice dictation feature. "Having a great time" and away it went!

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
I'm kind of glad I don't have that right now, cuz ya'll are lighting up my Mentions column.

We're seeing the Notification Center now to see a response to a message he sent earlier.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
He just shared a page on Twitter with a little comment and, with a whistle, the tweet was sent.
DARREN MURPH A MINUTE AGO
(Sorry, out of place a bit.)
DARREN MURPH A MINUTE AGO
I love these travel sites in the demo. National Parks!

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
You can then swipe between your tabs and, with a pinch, you're into that tab.

There's multi-touch zooming but, if you zoom all the way out you pop into the tab view
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
We've just browsed to a National Geographic page, and we're seeing a "new scrolling" system that is "smooth and lightning fast." It's also, we understand, "really awesome."

IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Demo time again, we're seeing Tab View.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Yes, from any device. Nice trick, no manual pushing required.

"You just click it and you pick up your browsing right where you left off."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
It's iCloud Tabs and you'll see all the pages on all devices!
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
It'll pull in from your browsing history and bookmarks, too. And yes, all that's synced across all your devices.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
It's "the fastest on the planet" now. He's showing a unified search field. People clapping for this. People who like Chrome, apparently.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"So that's sharing. Next is the new Safari."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
You can tweet from Safari now and use other sharing options. It's built into the OS, which you'd know if you read our detailed preview from a few months back.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
No proper Siri -- at least not yet.

"You can talk into Facebook if you want, and even third-party applications, like Microsoft Word." That got a few chuckles.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Applause! People like to talk!
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"Next up: dictation. We're bringing dictation to the Mac."
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Alerts come in but stay there until you dismiss them.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
Now notifications of course slide in and, with two fingers, you can gesture your way back to the list.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Yes, disruptive.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Now notifications. "Sometimes when you're using a Mac it can have something it needs to tell you." He said that those notifications can be sometimes... disruptive.

Now we're looking at Documents in the Cloud more closely.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"And that's iMessage."

The Mac was updated automatically about 5 seconds later. Not bad!
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
A Pages demo, now, making changes on a document from his Phone, but we're watching the Mac.
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
Now we're looking at Documents in the Cloud more closely.
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
"And that's iMessage."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
"Now, if you're sitting here using your Mac and your phone buzzes with a new message, you can just respond on your Mac."
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
"I think the really huge one here is Messages."
IMAGE UPLOADED IN 1 YEARS
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
We've just launched the new Reminders app, which of course is iCloud-enabled. Using gestures you can page through reminders and, for the first time, you can get location-based reminders.
  • TIM STEVENSHe just got an update while at "work" to send a Father's Day card to his dad. Hello, dads.
IMAGE UPLOADED 2 MINUTES AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED 2 MINUTES AGO
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
We're going to get a demo on one of those MacBook Pros that we spotted earlier.

IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
And, yes, there's an SDK so that devs can jump onboard too!
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Document libraries are available and updated across all your devices. It's now in all of their "key" applications, like Pages, Numbers and Keynote plus Preview and TextEdit.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
He's talking Messages, Reminders and Notes. Document-based apps coming too, of course, with Documents in the Cloud.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"All of your content is up to date across all of your devices. And, with Mountain Lion, we introduced three new apps optimized for iCloud."

IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
That's going to blow up for sure, since Mountain Lion has support built-in.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
iCloud is the first. 125 million iCloud users registered.

Over 200 new features. We're going to look at "just eight" today.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Now we're talking Mountain Lion. "Lion makes it more natural than ever to work with the other new devices in our lives."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

It took 27 months for Windows 7 to get to this level.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
26 million copies of Lion shipped to date. "Our best selling release ever."
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
"The Mac has been doing great. We have 66 million Mac users now, triple what we had just five years ago."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Craig is now up on stage talking about OS X.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Comment from our Myriam Joire "Oh god, my wallet." That's about what we're all thinking.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
Lots of people excited in here. Lots of people wishing the Apple Store weren't offline.

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"The new, next-generation MacBook Pro with Retina display. It is the future and, best of all, it is going to start shipping today."

IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
He's showing an environmental checklist too. Energy Star 5.2, Arsenic-free, and all recyclable.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"And of course you can configure it even beyond that." So, yes, $3k seems well within reach.
$2199 is the starting price with a 2.3GHz quad-core chip, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of flash storage.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
We're running through configurations first.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Phil's back to tell us when we can.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Video is over, big, big applause. Lots of folks will want to be ordering these.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
They're calling this "The very best computer for today, and for the future."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Final Cut Pro can manage up to nine streams of video simultaneously. "No other notebook comes close to this kind of performance."

"Photographers have never been able to work on their images with this level of precision."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Craig Federighi is talking about the apps. "Aperture on the new MacBook Pro is a total gamer changer."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

There's an asymmetric fan that's said to be radically more quiet, which got a big round of applause.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
We're told the fan will be "nearly imperceptible" to the user. That we will believe when we hear it -- or, rather, when we don't.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
The video is also reminding us that using custom components enables this amazing level of engineering.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
The unibody is now an actual component of the display, not just a case. This reduces the number of layers and integrates the glass right into the frame, making it thinner.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
My poor Air? Yeah, she's not long for this world. Sorry, girl.
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
They're running through all the specs again and we're rubbing our hands over here. We can't wait to try one out, and hopefully we'll get to today.
IMAGE UPLOADED 2 MINUTES AGO
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
"Loading and working with your content is amazingly fast." We're getting a rundown of the 2X Thunderbolts, USBs and HDMI ports.
IMAGE UPLOADED 2 MINUTES AGO
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
Naturally, we can't really tell until we see them for ourselves. Hopefully soon...

Naturally, we can't really tell until we see them for ourselves. Hopefully soon...
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
We're seeing lots of incredible closeups of photos and text to demonstrate this clarity.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
"It's the highest resolution display we've ever put in a notebook... this display has over five million pixels. That's three million more than an HDTV."
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
"It's incredibly powerful and yet remarkably powerful. It's without doubt the very best computer that we've ever built."
IMAGE UPLOADED 2 MINUTES AGO
Lots of slow panning of the new laptop on a white background.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
It's Ive up on the screen. "With great intent you disconnect from the past."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"We love this so much we couldn't help ourselves. We made a video."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
There's a glass trackpad, backlit keyboard, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, FaceTime HD, dual microphones with beam forming for a "new generation" of voice apps. And, stereo speakers. "This is going to sound absolutely beautiful."

And, there's a FireWire 800 and Gigabit Ethernet Thunderbolt adapters.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
And the Black Magic 5K camera that can connect over Thunderbolt as well, as shown at NAB.

He's showing a Promise RAID drive running over Thunderbolt.

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
MagSafe has now been made even thinner!
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
And yes, that' sit.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Okay, on the right we have SD, HDMI and USB 3.0. On the left, MagSafe 2, Thunderbolt, USB 3 and a headphone jack.

IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"How's the battery life? We're really proud that we're getting up to seven hours of battery life, with up to 30 days of standby time."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
768GB of internal flash storage! "That's three quarters of a terabyte." Phil again with the math lesson.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Kepler GT 650M graphics.

Up to 2.7GHz quad-core Core i7s. And yes, up to 16GB of RAM!
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
He's saying there's "breakthrough work in asymmetric batteries" to make this work.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

We're seeing the inside, dominated by a massive amount of battery packs.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

He's showing the bottom, saying it's" prettier than the top of anyone else's new computer."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"Inside is just as amazing as that display."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

"You are going to see a gaming experience unlike any you've seen before."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Phil's pacing back and forth as he lists all these off, and smiling as he points to Diablo III, also updated.

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Phil's listing off some third-parties that are cooking up some updates. Adobe's working in a new Photoshop. Autodesk has a new AutoCAD on the way, too.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"Now, applications do have to be updated to take advantage of this Retina display." Those that have not been can be pixel-doubled, but they'll look a bit jank.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
Final Cut pro updated too. The upper-right corner of the screen is 100% 1080p video. Pixel-perfect with plenty of room for a full timeline and library!
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO

Aperture has been updated as well. "If you love working with photos, not only has the UI been updated, but you're now looking at four times the resolution."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"It's gorgeous."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"Surfing the web can be like experiencing magazine-like quality."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
All the stock apps have been updated to use this resolution. "Reading your mail is like reading fine print."
Yes, reduced glare! It still looks like a glossy display, though.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
He's also tauting higher contrast ratios, better viewing angles, and reduced glare.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

This is the world's highest-resolution notebook display!
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"To use it is absolutely stunning." 15.4-inch display with a pixel density of 2880 x 1800. "That four times the number of pixels than the previous generation of MacBook Pro display." That's 220 ppi. 5,184,000 pixels.

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"Yes, it is a retina display." Big, big applause!
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
People are seriously excited in here.

Weighs 4.46 pounds. The lightest Pro ever.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
0.71-inches thin. It's 1/4 thinner than the current Pro. It's very nearly as thin as an Air!
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
He's closed it and it just sunk into the stage!
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"Now don't worry we're going to tell you all about it in just a minute. We just have to enjoy for a second just how incredible this is."

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"It's thinner than my finger" says Phil. Phil, let it be known, does not have chubby fingers.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

Not tapered like the Air, but very, very thin. Looks like roughly 2x the height of a USB port.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
We're rotating. It's deliciously thin!
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
And there it is! "The next-generation MacBook Pro is the most beautiful computer we've ever made... There's never been a notebook that is this gorgeous."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
"So would you like to see the next-generation MacBook Pro?"
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
Radically thin and light, bold and brave... "and willing to discard the old legacy things..."
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
"We want the next-generation Pro to have a killer new Display... "

Yeah, yeah we do . Phil.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"Want to know the answer?"
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"So we've been asking the team to think about: what would make a next-generation MacBook pro."

He's talking about discarding "legacy" technologies -- optical drives and Ethernet ports, for example.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"You know, with the MacBook Air the engineering team did something really bold... they re-invisioned the consumer notebook."
Oohhh, we're seeing a new model on the screen.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"So what's next?"

"Nobody turns over their entire line as quickly as Apple."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
And yes, they still have optical drives...
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"So across the board, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro all upgraded today."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Also shipping today!
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
Still talking 7-hours of battery life here.
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
15-inch is $1799 and $2199 for the fast model.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
13-inch starts at $1199, up to 1499 if you do the dual-core i7.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
Again, all USB 3.0. 13-inch and 15-inch size. No 17-incher?
IMAGE UPLOADED 2 MINUTES AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED 2 MINUTES AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED 2 MINUTES AGO
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
The 15-inch does indeed have Kepler GeForce GT 650M, up to 1GB of memory. That, too, is 60% faster than the old 15-inch model's discrete.

8GB of 1600MHz memory and, again, 60% faster integrated graphics.

IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"We also have a really nice update to the MacBook Pro. It is the quintessential professional notebook."
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
"And best of all, starts shipping today."
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
1440 x 900 on the 13-inch. Again, $100 cheaper than the current mode.
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Still talking 1366 x 768 displays on the 11-inch model.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO

TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
Big applause for USB 3!
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
USB 3.0 is confirmed!
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
500MBps read speed, upwards of 2x faster than the current model!
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
"That's half a terabyte of flash storage." Yes, yes it is.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
Now 512GB of flash storage!
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO

Okay, Air gets Ivy Bridge processors, up to 2GHz dual-core i7, up to 8GB of 1600MHz memory and "60% faster graphics"
  • TIM STEVENSStill integrated.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"It has really changed the consumer notebook market." You can't argue with that.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
"It is a breakthrough, and everyone is trying to copy it. But, they find it's not so easy."
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
This is being typed on an Air, by the way. It's feeling a bit nervous. It'll be okay.
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
"Let's start with the MacBook Air..."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"It is by far the best in the industry. The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro each stand out in their respective area."

"Today, we get to talk to you about the MacBook lineup."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"Good morning everyone, I hope you're having fun. I am."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
And now it's time for Phil Schiller!

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
He's also promising updates to OS X and iOS as well.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Yes, new hardware confirmed!
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"Today we're announcing exciting new changes in our notebook lineup..."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"Now, we love giving you a platform and a store to realize your dreams, and the teams at Apple have been hard at work to deliver new innovations so that you can take your dreams even further."

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"It's a great reminder of what it's all about, and why we do what we do."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
That was pretty heartwarming, I have to admit.

Big applause as the video comes to a close and Tim Cook comes back on stage.

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
They're all saying "thanks" for the opportunities afforded to them.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
Now we're circling back... the forest, India, Vermont...
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
"Apps have the biggest impact on humanity right now. It feels fantastic that people can find so much happiness for apps."
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A MINUTE AGO
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
Now the developer again. "The obvious choice was to develop for iOS."
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
"Kids don't realize they're working on developing skills. It's a tool for me, a toy for her" said her mother.
IMAGE UPLOADED 2 MINUTES AGO
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
Now we're listening to a girl with a speech impediment, using the iPad to communicate and interact with her family.
IMAGE UPLOADED 2 MINUTES AGO
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
You can probably get the message here: hardcore developer evangelism. And that makes perfect sense. This is, after all, a developer conference.
IMAGE UPLOADED 3 MINUTES AGO
TIM STEVENS 3 MINUTES AGO
"Apple makes it so easy for designers like us, for engineers like us to stretch our imagination."
IMAGE UPLOADED 3 MINUTES AGO

Again, chatting with the developers. "All these existing spaces existed before us, but we've given them a place to come together."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
We're hearing about Airbnb. "We don't think about it as a business, we think about it as making new friends."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

Yes, Vermont. The best state in the Union.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
We're back in the country, looking at an amazing treehouse in Lincoln, Vermont.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"With the processing power we can push the boundaries of what can be done with the technology."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Now we're talking to the developers again. "We originally started off as a medical stock image company, but when the iPad came out... we were also change to do beautiful learning."

It's 3D Anatomy on the iPad. "This is the power of really amazing apps."
IMAGE UPLOADED IN 1 YEARS

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"It's made it fun to learn about our own body and skeleton.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
They're projecting the human body onto a sheet. Teaching anatomy using an iPad.

Mumbai it is.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Now we're in a classroom with a bunch of happy kids. Looks like India or Pakistan.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

"It's great! People write me from around the world and tell me 'You have changed my life.'"
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
The developer is talking about the app, helping blind people to explore the world. "I didn't even think about choosing another platform. With my app they can have information about their position."
He's blind and his iPhone is helping him to find his way. "A real, blind adventure."

It's dark, we're hearing birds chirping and footsteps in a forest.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
It's time for a video to highlight some of these!

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"There are such heartwarming stories out there of what the combination of our incredible devices and your amazing apps have made in peoples lives."
"Nothing makes us happier than seeing hundreds of thousands of developers around the world using our hardware and our software to create and share their latest and greatest ideas."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO

Sadly, still no North Korea. Sorry, folks.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO

32 new countries are coming to the App Store, 155 total!
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"I'm very pleased to announce a new milestone for the app store. Customers have now downlated an astounding 30 billion apps!"
  • TIM STEVENSYes, he said downlated. He meant downloaded.

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"I'd like to get started this morning by giving you just a few updates on the App Store... the most vibrant app ecosystem on the planet."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Over 1000 Apple engineers. "We closed Apple for the week!"

IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO

Attendees from over 60 countries and 112 sessions with 125 labs planned for the week.
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"It's the longest-running developer conference that we're aware of anywhere."
IMAGE UPLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO
"We have a great week planned for you, and some really cool stuff to show you this morning. This is our 23rd WWDC. Yes, it's older than many of you are."
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
"Thank you! Thank you!"
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Good morning, Tim!

"How many developers does it take to change a lightbulb? None, that's a hardware problem."

She's doing a stand-up routine, complete with drum kicks!

"Hello and welcome to WWDC. I'm Siri, your virtual assistant and today I was asked to warm up the crowd, which should be easy since the high will be 75 degrees."

Hold onto your browsers, folks. Here we go.

Okay, Coldplay song is coming to a close. People are cheering...

Music is getting louder. Not quite E3-level eardrum shattering, but a basically at "Prometheus at IMAX" decibels.
We are, if you didn't know, in a massive auditorium in the Moscone Center. Lots and lots and lots of excited folks in here.

The Coldplay is giving us all a good vibe here as we're just two minutes away.

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Hard to know from here, but the bezels certainly look thin. Sadly, my eyesight isn't good enough to tell the resolution from 100 feet away.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
There are a couple of MacBooks up on stage, possible that they're the new models.

Thanks for all your tweets! It's time for us to get focused now.

Coldplay! Paradise on the speakers. This reminds me, I should really book a flight to Hawaii. It's been too long, Kauai. Too long.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Okay, we were just asked to put our devices to silent mode and to take our seats. We're 4 minutes away!
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
More updates from the twitterverse. @craditya "Huge fan from India! Expecting cmplte Mac hardware refresh, Mountain Lion, iOS6 and a one more thing feature of iPhone 5 peak." I'd love to see it, but I don't think we'll get any teases today.
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
Oh, one more prediction: Darren Murph is going to take some killer pics.
  • DARREN MURPHYou're too kind. Some would say the nicest guy in tech.
DARREN MURPH 2 MINUTES AGO
(Though, to be fair, I just asked someone wearing a "Staff" shirt and posted what they said. Hopefully they're "in the know.")

Predictions? Retina display 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros, loads of detail on iOS 6, Siri coming to iPad in the fall, Retina iMacs, and not a word on Mac Pro, MacBook Air or Apple TV.
Also, lots of use of euphemistic language.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
I'm also hoping for a flash keyboard in iOS 6. Something mind-blowingly good.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
People are asking for my predictions. I think the 9to5Mac reports from Mark Gurman are going to prove to be on the mark. (Sorry, bad pun.) Namely: new MacBook Pros and refreshed Airs and more.

@adomanico01 is hoping for a better email client in iOS. That's crazy talk.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
That said, most of them turned out to be pretty boring, so there's something to be said for substance.
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
This is nothing like last week's E3 keynotes, which had dizzying arrays of displays and projectors everywhere.
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
Up on stage is a massive Apple logo on the single, large screen. White on a black gradient.
TIM STEVENS 2 MINUTES AGO
They have a small Apple logo on the back between the shoulder blades, and the word "Keynote" on the front. Typically minimalist.
TIM STEVENS 3 MINUTES AGO
Still lots of folks milling about, mostly Apple staff in various brightly-colored shirts. Orange and green are the predominant choices.

A great prediction from @bdepaz: "iphones with friggin' lasers attached to them… macbooks as well" -- I'm thinking retina sharks are much more likely.
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
From @jotade11 "Just want to say to you, and the Engadget team, how good the livestream-page looks! Nice work!" Thank you! The dev team that knocked this out is killer.

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
@Sebiroth1 is hoping for a virtual, app controller for games on AppleTV. We're definitely hoping for a lot more functionality in AppleTV today!

@howedj is asking for photos of yours truly and Darren. Coming right up...
TIM STEVENS A MINUTE AGO
Okay, more tweets... @AlexanderAhlsen is asking what system we're using for live updates. It's a custom suite. Sorry, can't share!

I have to say, we're both thrilled to be here and thrilled you're here to join us. This is going to be a big event and we'll do our best to bring it to ya.

We're rocking on Verizon LTE at the moment and crossing our fingers that it stays solid.
  • TIM STEVENSPlease do a little connectivity dance for us, if you would.

TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
There looks to be plenty of seating, but sadly nowhere near enough connectivity. The Apple-provided WiFi option died before the doors even opened. Its backup imploded quickly after.
TIM STEVENS A FEW SECONDS AGO
Taking a moment away from the live-retweeting for a moment, the music is swelling a bit and it's a mixture of journalists chatting and people desperately hunting for the best possible remaining seats.

One @bheater is predicting Ice Cream Sandwich on the iPhone 3GS, which is pure insanity.
  • TIM STEVENSWe all know the 3GS can't handle that kind of firepower.

@EpicgamerMor is hoping for a touch-screen retina iMac. I can't say that isn't a possibility.
  • TIM STEVENSAlso a possibility: fingerprints.

@MrStig91 is hoping for an iPhone 5. I think he'd be more likely to see the Kia Cee'D setting a fast lap time at the test track.

Apple WWDC 2012 liveblog!
Back in March, at the tail end of the new iPad's launch, Apple CEO Tim Cook did something atypical. He encouraged us to expect even more from his company in 2012. From an outfit that rarely sets lofty expectations, that's saying something. Here at WWDC 2012, we're on hand to find out what exactly Apple has in the hopper. A deep dive into iOS 6 is guaranteed, but beyond that, all we have are rumors, smoke signals and few underground whispers. New MacBook Air / Pro laptops with Retina graphics? New iMacs with more pixels that are calculable by mere mortals? A new iPhone? Join us here at 10AM PT (that's 1PM on the right coast; pre-breakfast over in Kauai) for the blow-by-blow coverage you've come to expect!
