AT&T Ships Out iPad 2 With Monday Delivery Date

No comments:

It appears that customers who online ordered their iPad 2s from AT&T instead of Apple may actually receive them first, according to an AppleInsider report.

Apple's own online orders were reported to ship within "3 to 5 business days," resulting delivery between March 18-25. If AT&T's delivery report is correct, it appears it is poised to beat Apple's delivery dates by four days to almost two weeks.

Our iPad accessories have been "prepared for shipment" by Apple; however, we are still waiting on the iPad itself to ship.

Detailed iPad 2 Performance Benchmarks

No comments:

AnandTech has posted detailed benchmarks of the new A5 processor and display found in the iPad 2.

Points of Interest:
● It's safe to say that there are a pair of ARM Cortex A9s in there
● Geekbench reports the iPad 2 at 512MB of memory, double the original iPad's 256MB.
● L2 cache size has also apparently increased from 512KB to 1MB.
● Stdlib write test which shows a near doubling of bandwidth from 1.2GB/s to 2.3GB/s
● 31% increase in single threaded integer performance over the A4
● There appear to be multiple panel vendors in play here
● iPad 2 seems to be marginally brighter with a bit worse black levels than the original iPad, resulting in a lower contrast ratio

Ahead of their GPU benchmarks AnandTech has posted side by side comparisons of Infinity Blade taken from the iPad 1 and iPad 2 optimized versions. Check out the improvement below...

iPad vs. iPad 2: RAM Performance in MobileSafari Video

No comments:

TiPb has posted a nice video demonstrating how the iPad 2's increase in RAM makes MobileSafari perform much better.

The original iPad tends to "kill" background tabs whenever it runs out of available memory, which can get pretty annoying if you use the iPad primarily for web browsing. The iPad 2 performed flawlessly and had no hiccups when browsing. Also the dreaded "checkerboard effect" — where significant lag would occur before Safari could render the web page content — is nowhere to be found. Scrolling in Safari is smooth as butter, and gone are the days when switching between tabs meant loading the entire page from scratch.

iFixIt Posts iPad 2 Teardown Video

No comments:

iFixit has posted a teardown of the iPad 2 revealing its internal components.

A new model number graces the iPad 2: A1395. Thank you, Apple! That's much nicer of you than the twenty-six billion iterations of MacBook Pros you called model A1286.

Key Observations:
● As much as we hated trying to remove the clips in the original iPad, this much adhesive is even more of a pain. Be ready to crack your front panel if you dare open it!
● 3.8V, 25 watt-hour battery. Capacity of 6930 mAh.
● Broadcom BCM5973KFBGH Microcontroller used for touchscreen
● Broadcom BCM5974 CKFBGH capacitative touchscreen controller
● Apple 1GHz A5 Processor
● Toshiba TH58NVG7D2FLA89 16GB NAND Flash
● Apple-branded 338S0940 A0BZ1101 SGP
● Wi-Fi board; powered by another Broadcom chip, a BCM43291HKUBC
● AGD8 2103 gyroscope next door to the LIS331DLH accelerometer, both by STMicroelectronics.

iPad 2 Repairability Score - 4 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair)
● The LCD is really easy to remove once the front panel is gone.
● Only standard Phillips screws were used -- no Pentalobular or Tri-Wing funny-business.
● The front panel is now glued to the rest of the device, greatly increasing the chances of cracking the glass when trying to remove it.
● The battery is very securely stuck down to rear case, and you have to remove the logic board to remove it.
● You can't access the front panel's connector until you remove the LCD.

Twitter Tells Developers to Stop Making Mainstream Clients

No comments:

Twitter has published an update on the Twitter platform indicating that developers are no longer welcome to create mainstream Twitter clients.

Developers have told us that they’d like more guidance from us about the best opportunities to build on Twitter. More specifically, developers ask us if they should build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience. The answer is no.

If you are an existing developer of client apps, you can continue to serve your user base, but we will be holding you to high standards to ensure you do not violate users’ privacy, that you provide consistency in the user experience, and that you rigorously adhere to all areas of our Terms of Service. We have spoken with the major client applications in the Twitter ecosystem about these needs on an ongoing basis, and will continue to ensure a high bar is maintained.

Twitter notes that 90% of active Twitter users use their official clients on a monthly basis and suggests that developers focus on areas outside of the mainstream consumer client experience such as: Publisher tools, Curation, Realtime data signals, Social CRM, entreprise clients, brand insights, Value-added content and vertical experiences.
