Apple to Produce 10-12 Million iPad 2s in 2Q11?

No comments:

Apple is planning to produce 40 million iPad 2s in 2011, including 3 million iPad 2s in the first quarter and 10-12 million in the second, according to a DigiTimes report.

After producing 1.7-2 million units of the first-generation iPad in January, Apple began to phase out production of the old model in February, while beginning to roll out the iPad 2, according to component suppliers in Taiwan. Shipments of iPad 2 are expected to top 2-3 million units in March, the sources added.

With a shipment ratio of 4:6 for the first and second halves, shipments of iPad 2 are likely to reach 21.5-24 million units in the second half of the year, the sources estimated.

The iPad 2 will be available in the U.S. starting March 11th and will come to many more countries on March 25th.

Who is Winning the U.S. Smartphone Battle?

No comments:

Nielsen has just released data examining the battle for domination of the U.S. smartphone industry. They note that the winner depends on whether you're looking at operating systems or manufacturers.

When it comes to consumer marketshare by operating system, Android (29%) appears to be pulling ahead of RIM Blackberry (27%) and Apple iOS (27%). But an analysis by manufacturer shows RIM and Apple to be the winners compared to other device makers since they are the only ones creating and selling smartphones with their respective operating systems. HTC follows with 12 percent of consumer smartphone owners having an HTC Android device and 7 percent owning an HTC device running a Microsoft OS. Ten percent of consumer smartphone owners had a Motorola Android device and one percent owned a Motorola device running a Microsoft OS.

You can see this visually represented below...

Apple in Negotiations With Labels to Allow Unlimited Downloads of Purchases

No comments:

Apple is reportedly in negotiations with music labels to allow for unlimited downloading of purchased tracks, according to Bloomberg.

Apple is negotiating with music companies including Vivendi SA (VIV)’s Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group Corp. (WMG) and EMI Group Ltd., said the people, who asked for anonymity because the talks are private. An agreement may be announced by midyear, two of the people said.

This would give iTunes customers a permanent backup of their music purchases and let them download purchases directly to their other devices without the need to sync.

The new download policy is reportedly one of several service changes Apple is exploring. Improvements to the capabilities of Apple's MobileMe service and reductions in its pricing are also being considered.

AT&T Introduces New Monthly Billing Option for Tablets

No comments:

AT&T today introduced new postpaid billing options for tablets. Beginning today, customers can choose between AT&T's existing prepaid billing options or the new postpaid plans. The new plans can be added to customers' existing monthly wireless statements, offering the simplicity of a single monthly bill. For a limited time, customers who activate a new postpaid $25/2 GB plan will receive the first month free.

The new postpaid billing option will be available across AT&T retail locations, as well as att.com, Best Buy, Fry’s, select Nexcom locations, and Walmart stores nationwide.

"Tablets offer the convenience of mobile broadband virtually anywhere and our new billing options give customers the flexibility to choose how they prefer to be billed," said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets.

Customers may choose from the following options:
● Postpaid: $14.99 for 250 MB or $25 for 2 GB. Customers on the 2 GB plan who exceed their monthly data allotment will be charged $10 per 1 GB of overage. Charges will appear on customers' monthly wireless statements.
● Prepaid: $14.99 for 250 MB or $25 for 2 GB. Customers on the 2 GB plan who exceed their monthly data allotment may choose to purchase an additional 2 GB for $25. Charges will appear on customers' credit card statements.

Both options are month-to-month and do not require a long-term commitment.

Apple Tops Fortune's List of Most Admired Companies

No comments:

For the fourth straight year, Apple has topped Fortune's list of Most Admired companies.

Apple took a stock hit when iconic CEO Steve Jobs announced in January that he'd be taking a second medical leave, two years after receiving a liver transplant during a six-month sabbatical. But Jobs assured the market in the company's recent earnings report that Apple was still "firing on all cylinders."

It certainly appears to be. Apple nearly doubled its quarterly profits vs. a year ago. The iPad 2 was introduced in March, marking the second generation of one of Apple's milestone product successes. And Jobs made a surprise appearance at the launch.

Another huge move by Apple was the announcement this January that the iPhone 4 would be available from Verizon, offering another option to consumers frustrated with dropped calls on AT&T. --By Shelley DuBois
