Ex-Apple Manager Pleads Guilty to Fraud, Conspiracy, Money Laundering

No comments:

Paul Devine, a former global supply manager at Apple, has pleaded guilty to wire fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering after being accused of taking kickbacks from Asian suppliers.

Reuters reports that Devine passed confidential information to suppliers to help them negotiate favorable contracts with Apple.

Devine pleaded guilty on Monday to wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering in a San Jose federal court, the U.S. Attorney's office announced. He also agreed to forfeit about $2.28 million in money and property.

"Mr. Devine is a good man who made a mistake, and now he's trying to make amends," his attorney Raphael Goldman said on Monday.

Devine faces a maximum prison term of 20 years. Sentencing is scheduled for June 6.

Former Prime Minister George Brown Blocked Steve Jobs' Knighthood

No comments:

A new Telegraph report claims that former Prime Minister George Brown refused to knight Steve Jobs in 2009 because he turned down an invitation to speak at the Labour Party conference.

Mr Jobs was snubbed despite the 2005 award of an honorary knighthood to Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft and a long-term rival. His friend Bono, the U2 front man, who collaborated with Apple on a special charity edition iPod, is also an honorary KBE.

The former MP was told by Downing Street that the decision was related to a failed attempt to attract Mr Jobs to Labour’s annual conference. Given his status as a superstar of business and technology, such an appearance would have been viewed as a coup for Mr Brown.

A spokeswoman for the former Prime Minister denied the allegations, "Mr Brown did not block a knighthood for Steve Jobs".

Random House Could Soon Join Apple's iBookstore

No comments:

Random House, the world's largest book publisher, may soon offer its catalog on the iBookstore, according to an AppleInsider report.

In a brief statement to the media Monday, Random House said that it has agreed to "the agency model for e‐book sales" in the U.S. effective Tuesday. That means that going forward, "Random House will set consumer prices for the e‐ books we publish, and […] will provide retailers with a commission for each sale," the publisher said.

"The agency model guarantees a higher margin for retailers than did our previous sales terms," Random House said. "We are making this change both as an investment in the successful digital transition of our existing partners and in order to give us the opportunity to forge new retail relationships."

The report speculates that Apple may announce the addition of Random House to the iBookstore at its March 2nd event which will likely be used to unveil the iPad 2.

iPad 2 Supply Could Be Limited Due to Issues With New Ultra-Thin Glass

No comments:

Supplies of the new iPad could be limited at launch due to production issues with a new ultra-thin glass screen, according to AppleInsider.

Bill Shope with Goldman Sachs said in a note to investors this week that sources in Apple's overseas supply chain have indicated that the iPad 2 may be affected by production difficulties. These alleged problems could result in limited supply available at launch, for a surprising product availability that AppleInsider has heard could happen near immediately.

"It appears that Apple is once again pushing the technology envelope by making the device far thinner than the original iPad, and the iPad 2's ultra-thing glass screen is generating yield issues," the analyst wrote. "This appears to be more of a process problem as opposed to a technology problem, and we wouldn't be surprised to see volumes ramp fairly quickly as the process improves."

Last week a report claimed Apple shipments of the iPad 2 may have been delayed from April until June due to production bottlenecks at Hon Hai. This report was widely discredited by several sources including DigiTimes who said Apple has chosen to drop production volume targets to keep the tablet on schedule.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPad 2 at a special event on March 2nd.

Dock Connector From the iPhone 5?

No comments:

Apple.pro has posted a photo claiming to be of the dock connector and cable for the iPhone 5.

MacRumors notes that "the part is nearly identical to the corresponding part found in the current iPhone, with the main exception of a slightly narrower connector and cable where the part connects to the device's main board. The connector carries a part number of 821-1300-02, compared to 821-1281-A for the Verizon iPhone and 821-1093-A for the original iPhone 4."

If the part is legitimate it would it suggest that Apple is not switching to micro-USB connectivity for its devices and will likely just include an adapter to satisfy the European Commission's universal charger standard.
