New York Plaza Now Features an iPad in Each Guest Room

No comments:

The New York Plaza has placed an iPad in each guest room to provide concierge services and more, according to TiPb.

Some of the features include ordering of room service, restaurant reservations, wake up calls, city guides, check airline schedules and even printing of boarding passes. The iPad can even control the rooms lighting, heating and air conditioning as well as offering guests' access to the web.

Intelity who customized its ICE software (Interactive Customer Experience) to provide the hotel with what they needed.

"Before in the guest rooms, we had another digital panel that controlled the lights, the temperature and some guest services," Shane Krige, general manager of The Plaza explained to Luxist. "But it wasn’t sophisticated enough for what we wanted to do. So we teamed up with Intelity to devise the software for the program. We chose the iPad because it is a great piece of equipment that is here to stay and won't disappear tomorrow," adds Krige. "It brings another five star element to the hotel."

LAPP Seize $10 Million in Fake iPhones, iPods

No comments:

The Los Angeles Port Police have seized more than $10 million in counterfeit iPhones and iPods from a sophisticated downtown warehouse.

"This was a well-funded operation, and the counterfeits looked very authentic," said Ron Boyd, chief of the L.A. Port Police force. Boyd notes that a buyer might not have noticed the counterfeit until he or she got home and tried to hook up with iTunes.

Investigators said they thought that the shipment was designed to get Apple Inc. lookalike products into the market during the recent buzz over the Consumer Electronics Show. Some of the products were designed to look like older Apple products, such as iPod Nanos without touch screens, which remain popular with some consumers.

Bahram Zahab, 45, and his brother Edward Zahab, 40, have been arrested and charged with the sale of counterfeit goods.

Apple Plans to Remove Retail Box Software From Stores?

No comments:

Apple is planning to remove retail box software from Apple Stores in favor of digital distribution sooner than expected, according to MacRumors.

Based on what we've heard, however, Apple is planning on making the move to all digital sooner than expected at their retail stores. Apple is working towards eliminating boxed software and presumably focusing sales through the Mac App Store.

The report also notes that these plans fall in line with Apple's new Personal Setup for Mac that will teach each new Mac owner how to use the Mac App Store.

"When you purchase a Mac at an Apple Retail store an employee will help you setup your e-mail accounts, walk you through the Mac App Store, setup an iTunes account for you, and show you the basic pointers of owning a Mac. Some stores will even have dedicated Mac setup stations."

It's not clear how Apple will deal with software applications that are not sold through the Mac App Store.

Last.fm Radio Becomes a Pay Service on Mobile Devices

No comments:

On February 15, the Last.fm radio service built into mobile apps and home entertainment devices will become an ad-free, paid subscriber feature.

Last.fm Radio will remain free on the Last.fm website in the US, UK and Germany and for the US and UK users of Xbox Live and Windows Mobile 7 phones. They’ll also continue to offer radio for free via the Last.fm desktop app.

Why the change?
-
On the Last.fm website an ad-supported, free-to-listeners model is what supports our online radio services in the US, UK and Germany. In other markets and on emerging mobile and home entertainment devices, it is not practical for us to deliver an ad supported radio experience, but instead, we will migrate to what we believe is the highest quality, lowest cost ad-free music service in the world.

We believe our radio -whether it’s a personalised station or artist and tag radio – is the best in the world and we’re proud of the depth and range of our catalogue of music from major labels, indies and unsigned artists. We’re committed to building Last.fm into a bigger service that gives listeners the best music discovery experience anywhere while financially supporting and promoting the artists who make the music we love.

You’ll see that this change brings us in line with other music services that already charge you to listen to music on mobile devices. For the cost of a fancy coffee, a Last.fm monthly subscription allows you to listen to radio across all platforms, on all your devices, and without commercial interruptions.

This change only affects the radio component of Last.fm’s services on mobile and home entertainment devices. Other features of our service — like scrobbling, music and event recommendations, social networking and community forums, and Last.fm’s wiki-based artist information pages — remain free to users worldwide.
-

You can download Last.fm from the App Store.

Motorola's Anti-Apple Superbowl Commercial [Video]

No comments:

Motorola's Superbowl ad, 'Empower the People', takes aim at Apple's restrictive platform while promoting its new XOOM tablet.

Created by Anomaly New York, the ad entitled "Empower the People" is set in an Orwellian, 1984-esque world where technology – and people – are limited by restrictive platforms. Enter Motorola XOOM - the tablet to create a better world - and a new day with optimism, openness, freedom and empowerment.

Motorola XOOM redefines the tablet category by providing more ways to have fun, connect with friends and stay productive on the go. Out of more than 20,000 products announced at CES last month, the Motorola XOOM was named “Best in Show” by CNET and lauded with numerous accolades and awards.

Windows Monitoring On A Budget

No comments:

Independent developer Steve Jarman has announced the release of Senses6, an iPhone-centric monitoring and alerting solution for Windows-based hosts. This agent-based system allows server administrators and engineers to receive notifications of potential problems within their IT infrastructure, as well as providing the ability to perform numerous management tasks remotely via their iPhone or iPod touch device, from any location, all via a standard internet connection.

The ability to monitor IT infrastructure has become increasingly important as organisations have become more reliant on their technology. Some organisations do not see the value in, or simply cannot afford, large-scale monitoring solutions and leave themselves somewhat at risk. Senses6 is one solution to this problem, offering an easily configured, inexpensive solution to monitoring and diagnosing Windows-based systems within small to medium organisations.

A Senses6 implementation involves the installation of a small Windows service on each system that is being monitored. The agent submits information regarding the system's performance to a central database via a standard internet connection, as well as periodically checking for requests being made by engineers via their devices. Additionally, performance data is compared against configured thresholds to determine whether or not a performance alert should be raised. System outages can be detected via a peer-availability system in which each monitored host periodically checks the response of its fellow systems.

The Senses6 iPhone app serves as a viewer for the information submitted by the agent, and as such, requires only a standard internet connection for full functionality. Users are not required to connect to their organisation's network via any form of VPN (virtual private network). Users can also perform tasks such as process terminations, service restarts, and even system restarts via their device from any remote location. Alerts are delivered to users via the push notification service and email.

Teams of engineers can view the same organisational data using individually purchased copies of the Senses6 app on their devices. The Senses6 agent can be freely downloaded and installed on any number of Windows systems. Senses6 has been designed from conception to be a serious solution in the Windows monitoring space, providing genuine value to its users, and genuine benefit to their organisation.

Pricing and Availability:
Senses6 (v1.0) is $8.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Utilities category.
