Geohot is Now Working For Facebook

No comments:

Facebook has hired Geohot, the popular hacker behind the iPhone and Sony Playstation jailbreaks, reports TechUnwrapped.

Joshua Hill (P0sixninja) recently mentioned in an interview that Geohot is trying to avoid the limelight after his legal battle with Sony and is concentrating on his day job at Facebook.

Gabe Rivera of Techmeme reports that Geohot started at Facebook in May and announced it on his Facebook account on June 17th. His last wall post says, "Facebook is really an amazing place to work...first hackathon over."

We wish Geohot the best of luck at Facebook but also hope he has some time left to contribute to the iPhone community.

Apple Blocks iPhone 4 Unlock Via Gevey SIM

No comments:

Apple has blocked the ability to unlock the iPhone 4 using the Gevey SIM in iOS 5.0b2, according to MuscleNerd.

it's surprising Apple closed Gevey interposer hole in b2 rather than waiting until final (maybe they were under pressure)

Gevey's SIM Interposer was able to unlock the iPhone 4 by force activating the baseband using the emergency dialer. MuscleNerd notes that its unlikely Gevey will try to battle Apple while iOS 5 is in the beta period.

Apple posts iCloud transition FAQ; Mail, Contacts, Calendar and Find my iPhone web apps stay

No comments:

Apple has posted a new web page that is dedicated to answering frequently asked questions about the transition from MobileMe to Apple’s new iCloud service, which launches this fall (via TechCrunch). The webpage explains which services are staying with iCloud and which are going (shown in image above). Those are in addition to these new services:

iTunes in the Cloud
Photo Stream
Documents in the Cloud
Automatic downloads and purchase history for apps and books
Backup and restore
The site also says that users will be able to migrate their current .Mac or MobileMe username to the iCloud service. A big question as of late has been over whether or not iCloud will include functionality in the browser; Apple answers:

Yes. Web access to iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Find My iPhone will be available at icloud.com this fall.

Current MobileMe services such as iDisk, Web Gallery, Mac-based sync services, and iWeb published websites will still be supported, for current MobileMe and .Mac (where applicable) users, until June 30, 2012. New iCloud users, which can sign up for a free Me.com account as a part of iCloud, will not be able to access those features.

Microsoft vs. Apple The History of Computing InfoGraphic

No comments:

Manolution has published an incredibly detailed timeline of events and stock prices throughout the historic battle between Microsoft and Apple.

Despite maintaining dominance of the OS market for over three decades, Microsoft’s stocks continue to trade at or below their first ever public value of $27.50 (at closing on 3/13/1986).

Thanks to Apple’s extremely successful ventures into various hand-held gadget markets (namely the iPod, iPhone and iPad) Apple’s stock continues to rise, trading at over $300 more than that of Microsoft’s as of 6/6/2011.

Manolution predicts the gap in stock pricing between the two companies will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.

iOS 5 Offers Evidence That Apple is Building Its Own Maps

No comments:

More evidence that Apple is building its own maps solution has been found in iOS 5, according to MacRumors.

The site was tipped off to a new "Map Data" section in iOS 5's legal disclaimers. This section is separate from Google Map's terms and many of the companies do not overlap.

• CoreLogic - offers Parcel data which marks boundaries for of properties to provide positional accuracy in location-based solutions.
• Getchee - provides location and market data on China, India and Southeast Asia.
• Increment P Corp - provides location and traffic data for Japan.
• Localeze - provides local business listings.
• MapData Sciences Pty Ltd. Inc - provides mapping data for Australia and New Zealand.
• DMTI - provides postal code data for Canada.
• TomTom - offers global TeleAtlas mapping data which is also licensed by Google for their map solution.
• Urban Mapping - provides in-depth neighborhood data such as crime, demographics, school performance, economic indicators and more.
• Waze - offers real-time maps and traffic information based on crowd sourced data.

While Apple has reportedly signed on to continue using Google Maps, the company has publicly revealed that it's working on a traffic service for iOS users and its acquisitions and hirings suggest a full blown maps solution.

ICE Screen HD 1.2 Released

No comments:

DVMagic Studios has announced an update to its popular "ICE Screen HD" iPad 'Lock-Screen' wallpaper creation software. Completely rewritten, this new version has enhanced Photo management capabilities including cropping, resizing, instant special effects, additional fonts and a fantastic new 'in-app' graphical tutorial. This is the last update that will directly support iOS versions prior to 4.3 and is recommended for all users.

Easily create personalized "Lock-Screen" wallpapers with your own pictures and information. Commonly used to display Lost/Found contact information as well as ICE (In Case of Emergency) information such as contact, severe allergies and severe medical conditions.

The iPad was designed to be used while in both vertical and horizontal positions with ease. Orientation is an important concept to understand when creating wallpapers. Your iPad is rectangular in shape, therefore there are 2 primary directions that your device can display information is Portrait (Vertical) and Landscape (Horizontal). 'Portrait' and 'Landscape' are Photography terms that have come to generally describe Horizontal and Vertical orientations for devices.

Displaying a Portrait image on a horizontal device would cause the sides of the photo to be empty. The opposite is true while displaying a Landscape image while device is vertical. The top and bottom would have empty space. To handle this issue, the device automatically zooms into the center of your Lock-Screen image and zooms it in to fill the entire screen. When rotated back to Portrait, it automatically zooms it back out. So it is important to have your photo properly sized (zoomed) to fit the screen so that the iPad can properly display your image in both orientations.

Because the top and bottom areas of an image are automatically zoomed when device is horizontal, it is important to keep all of your text message out of the "Image Crop Areas". This is easy to do with the help of on-screen visual guides. Overlay your text message onto your photo or select a color background to create your new wallpaper. Text font, size, color, drop shadow angle(s) and color can be adjusted for the perfect look.

ICE Screen HD now has even more Photo Image Effects:
* Grayscale: Make bold statements and evoke emotions with the simple stylized beauty of black and white photographs
* Posterize: Over saturation of the yellow color channel for old postcard appearance
* Negative: Reverse image color channels for a "35mm film negative" appearance
* Sepia: Over saturation of "rust color" applied to image for an antique look. Combine with Grayscale first for even more effect
* Dulled: Under saturation of colors for a weathered/faded appearance of older photographs

Every iPad should have this information in case it is lost/found or for emergency responders to be able to contact your designee!

Pricing and Availability:
ICE Screen HD 1.29 is $1.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Utilities category.

Samsung Denied Access to the iPhone 5 and iPad 3

No comments:

Samsung has been denied access to the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 in its legal battle with Apple, according to FOSSPatents.

Apple has accused Samsung of copying its iPhone and iPad products and taken legal action against the company. As part of these proceedings Samsung was forced to hand over some of its unreleased devices to Apple. In turn, Samsung demanded that Apple be forced to hand over the iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

Yesterday, Judge Lucy Koh denied Samsung's request noting that the company was overreaching in their request. However, Koh hints that if Apple were to file a preliminary judgement that it may need to be evaluated against the background of the iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

Samsung is free to argue, for instance, that there is little likelihood of confusion because consumers will not encounter its products side-by-side with the iPhone 4 or iPad 2, but rather with Apple's next generation iPhone and iPad. Similarly, as to proximity, Samsung is free to argue that because the iPhone 4 and iPhone 2 will soon be outmoded and reduced in price, they are not being sold (or very soon will not be sold) to the same class of purchasers who are likely to buy new Samsung products. By choosing to allege infringement only of its current products, Apple opens itself up to these arguments.

Apple about to drop cheaper AirPort Extreme, 3TB Time Capsule (update: FCC confirms)

No comments:

Apple is set to release upgraded models of their AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule products. The brand name wireless routers have been constrained for many weeks now in retail locations across the globe: from Apple Stores to Best Buy to resellers world wide. The new AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule, first confirmed by 9to5Mac, will hit the streets any day now as part numbers for the devices have have been sent to us.

The AirPort Extreme will come in a single configuration and the Time Capsules will keep the 2TB configuration and add a 3TB model for the first time. According to the part number information, all three wireless router configurations will feature price drops. The Time Capsules are rumored to include a new software update caching feature that will store Mac OS and iOS updates on the device’s hard drive for installation on any networked Mac/iOS device.

Here are the new part numbers courtesy of Mr. X:

MD031LL/A – AIRPORT EXTREME 802.11N (5TH GEN)- USA

MD032LL/A – TIME CAPSULE 2TB (4TH GENERATION) – USA

MD033LL/A – TIME CAPSULE 3TB (4TH GENERATION) – USA

Also in the pipeline are new Mac minis, Mac Pros (likely launching in early August), and MacBook Airs (possibly later this month or early July).

[Update 1: July 21, 2011]: An updated AirPort Extreme wireless base station with marketing model number A1408 has surfaced in the FCC database, confirming our findings. Engadget explains that the filing drops hints of the three-stream standard for 450Mbps over both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

Black MacBook Airs coming soon? (Update: another source says unseen)

No comments:

MacRumors is reporting that Apple is readying Black MacBook Airs in its next refresh.

We’ve received several anonymous tips claiming that at least some models of the next-generation MacBook Air will be be available with a black finish, different from the aluminum case used on the current MacBook Air and most of Apple’s other Macs. The most specific of the claims suggests that a black anodized aluminum case would be available on a top-end MacBook Air model, in much the same way as Apple once offered a high-end black MacBook on top of the standard white offerings.
Remember that when we first broke the news of a MacBook Air way back in 2007 (without Optical drives), we’d been told there was a black version. That information was later verified with the Ebay auction selling a prototype MacBook Air with a Black aluminum shell (pictured above, another shot below).

We’ve also received an anonymous tip with a similar Lion/Sandy Bridge/Thunderbolt/Next few weeks release information. That tip also said a $899 starting price point.

Update: A reliable source has told us that they haven’t seen any Black in the new MacBook Air materials

Death of the web? No. But people are spending more time in Mobile Apps

No comments:

Steve Jobs’ favorite analytics company, Flurry, has some interesting numbers that put app usage above web usage.

Today, however, a new platform shift is taking place. In 2011, for the first time, smartphone and tablet shipments exceed those of desktop and notebook shipments (source: Mary Meeker, KPCB, see slide 7). This move means a new generation of consumers expects their smartphones and tablets to come with instant broadband connectively so they, too, can connect to the Internet.
Yeah but those devices have web browsers…

Our analysis shows that, for the first time ever, daily time spent in mobile apps surpasses desktop and mobile web consumption. This stat is even more remarkable if you consider that it took less than three years for native mobile apps to achieve this level of usage, driven primarily by the popularity of iOS and Android platforms. Let’s take a look at the numbers.
But what if one of those apps is a web browser like Opera? (via Business Insider.)

As a note of interest, Facebook has increasingly taken its share of time spent on the Internet, now making up 14 of the 74 minutes spent per day by consumers, or about one sixth of all Internet minutes. Considering Facebook’s recent leak regarding Project Spartan, an effort to run apps within its service on top of the mobile Safari browser, thus disintermediating Apple, it appears Facebook seeks to counter both Apple and Google’s increasing control over consumers as mobile app usage proliferates.

Apple acquires ‘AirDrop’ trademark from Android developer

No comments:

Patently Apple reports that Apple has successfully transferred the “Airdrop” trademark from Urban Airship, Inc., a company behind the AirDrop service that provides marketing services to Android developers. AirDrop in Apple’s hemisphere, of course, is a new Lion feature that lets the user easily share files with other nearby users. The trademark was transferred to Apple on May 11 and effective on June 9.

Apparently, “there was no financial transaction disclosure made available with this transfer”. Patently Apple also discovered that Apple filed for the ‘AirDrop’ trademark in China and another one in Canada related to the Photo Stream feature of the iCloud service which automatically uploads and syncs up to a thousand most recent photos across all iOS devices authorized with the same Apple ID.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s vice president of OS X software (note how they no longer refer to it as Mac OS X), pitched AirDrop in Apple’s Lion promo clip, “When you create docouments, you often wanna share them with friends nearby. With AirDrop, it’s never been easier. Just click on AirDrop, drop the file on the picture of your friend and AirDrop takes care of the rest. You no longer have to worry about network configuration and you don’t need to keep a USB drive in your pocket”.

Sony PS3 Jailbreak Hacker Bankrupted, May End Up in Jail

No comments:

Although Geohot was able to settle with Sony over the PS3 jailbreak, other hackers have not fared as well.

Graf_chokolo is a hacker who worked hard to bring linux back after Sony removed the install option from the PS3. He has run out of money to fight Sony's lawyers and may end up in jail as a result.

Hi guys, no money left anymore. Going to jail soon probably because i cannot pay court costs.

But i’m ready to stand up for everything i said and go to jail for that too. It’s not important to win, more important is to show them that we are ready to fight, that they cannot scare me off easily. Yeah, i’m ready to go to jail for my believes and my principles.

Most of people probably think that all computer and kernel hackers are weak kids, hiding in a cellar, eating pizza whole day, writing software and looking for attention :-) Maybe, but that’s NOT me. And i will get out eventually and continue my work. My work means very much to me.

Those looking to contribute to Graf's defense can do so here.

Best Buy to Match Apple's Back to School Promo?

No comments:

Best Buy will match Apple's Back to School special by giving a $100 Best Buy Gift Card to eligible customers, according to MacRumors.

Apple recently launched their 2011 Back to School promotion. Instead of the typical iPod giveaway, Apple is now offering a $100 iTunes/App Store gift card instead. We've been told that Best Buy will be matching this promotion with a $100 Best Buy gift card for the same qualifying customers. This is an unadvertised promotion, so customers will have to ask for it specifically.

If you can verify this offer let us know in the comments!

Apple Intensifies Complaint Against Samsung

No comments:

Apple has amended its complaint against Samsung asserting more patents and other intellectual property rights than before, according to FOSS Patents.

In the updated complaint Apple's copycat accusations are phrased more strongly and in more detail. The company says that Samsung "has been even bolder" than other competitors emulating Apple's products and has created "products that blatantly imitate the appearance of Apple's products to capitalize on Apple's success."

Apple also uses the media to strengthen its case.

The copying has been widely observed in the industry and has been mentioned in multiple articles reviewing Samsung products. For example, a writer for Wired wrote that Samsung's "Vibrant's industrial design is shockingly similar to the iPhone 3G." [...] "First Look: Samsung Vibrant Rips Off iPhone 3G Design." Another Wired writer wrote, "[L]et's settle one of the biggest arguments surrounding this phone. Yes, the Vibrant closely resembles a certain best-selling smartphone." [...] "Samsung Vibrant Looks Like an iPhone, Has Battery Life to Match." [...]

[A] Business Insider review of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 stated that, "[f]rom the front, it looks like an iPad." [...]

A recent CNET reviewer remarked: "Taking another page from the iPad 2's school of sexy tablet building, the 10.1 has one of the cleanest designs we've seen on a tablet. [...]"

[Fast Company:] "Samsung’s Anti-iPad 2 Policy" – "[To] Clone the Heck Out of It"

The new complaint removes two patents and adds three to list of those being infringed on. Apple will likely escalate the situation with the filing of a preliminary injunction request against Samsung in the near future.

Has Apple Drastically Reduce iPhone 4 Camera Flash Orders?

No comments:

Apple has drastically reduced its orders for the iPhone 4's flash suggesting that rumors of a new separate flash module for the next iPhone may be accurate, according to AppleInsider.

Apple is said to have "greatly reduced" orders of Philips LED flash components in the last one to two months. This person, who has provided accurate information on Apple's iPhone in the past, said the change "may" be a sign that Philips LED flash will not be used in the upcoming fifth-generation iPhone.

Last month Apple.pro posted a photo of Apple.pro of an iPhone 5 back cover with two holes; presumably for the rumored relocation of the camera flash. The relocation rumors were sparked after an iPhone case showed separate two separate holes on opposite sides of the device and then alleged camera components for the next iPhone were lacking the Flash and the part that blocks it from interfering with the lens.

iPad graphics provider Imagination outs next-gen PowerVR GPU licensees, three left unknown

No comments:

Imagination Technologies today announced that six key partners will be using their next-generation PowerVR Series 6 GPU code-named Rogue. However, the company named only three partners, saying the remaining three PowerVR Series6 licensees “are yet to be announced”. The three known ones are ST-Ericsson, Texas Instruments and MediaTek.

Apple is currently a licensee of Imagination’s graphics unit incorporated in the Apple-branded mobile chip alongside ARM’s Cortex-based CPU unit. Apple’s A5 chip uses Imagination’s PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU unit which delivers a ninefold performance increase compared to the A4 chip. The previous A4 chip inside iPhone 4 and iPad 1 is based around the single-core PowerVR SGX 535 GPU, which also powers the iPhone 3GS. It’s quite possible that Apple is one of the mysterious three licensees of the Rogue chip.

//
Imagination would only say that the Rogue GPU delivers “unrivalled GFLOPS per mm2 and per mW for all APIs”. We also know it’s backwards-compatible with the PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU used in iPad 2. Additionally, MacRumors points to a ST-Ericsson press release claiming that the Rogue GPU incorporated in ST-Ericsson’s upcoming Nova A9600 system-on-a-chip will be capable of rendering over 350 million real polygons per second. Apple holds a 9.5 percent stake in Imagination Technologies as of 2009. The gadget maker had originally secured a 3.6 percent stake in Imagination in December of 2008. Intel countered Apple’s move 48 hours later, buying a 3.04 percent stake in Imagination.

J.C. Penney Nabs Apple Senior VP of Retail, Rob Johnson

No comments:

J.C. Penney has hired Apple Senior Vice President of Retail Operations Ron Johnson to be its new President and eventual CEO., according to the WSJ.

The company is expected to announce Mr. Johnson's appointment later today. Mr. Johnson will become CEO in the next few months, succeeding long-time leader Myron "Mike" Ullman. He joined Apple from Target Corp., where he was vice president of merchandising for stores.

Ron joined Apple in January 2000 after having worked as vice president of merchandising for Target.

Here's Apple Bio on Johnson:

--
Ron Johnson joined Apple as senior vice president in January 2000. Reporting directly to the CEO, Johnson leads Apple's retail strategy and is responsible for its overall execution and performance. Under Ron's leadership, Apple has opened over 300 stores to date. Johnson has over 20 years of experience in retail and merchandising as well as a strong track record for delivering consistent year over year growth for billion-dollar companies.

Before joining Apple, Johnson held various management positions at the Target Corporation, most recently as Vice President of Merchandising for Target Stores. In this capacity, Johnson presided over a successful period of growth at Target, playing a key role in developing new initiatives for branding, marketing and merchandising. He led the team responsible for launching the Michael Graves exclusive line of products, as well as the addition of other key brands to the store’s selection.

Johnson received his M.B.A. from Harvard and his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Stanford University.
--

This is definitely a coup for J.C. Penney and an unfortunately loss for Apple.

Update: Official Announcement
Myron E. (Mike) Ullman, III, chairman and chief executive officer of J. C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP), today announced that Ron Johnson, an innovative and highly regarded retail executive, has been named the Company's next chief executive officer, succeeding Mr. Ullman in that role. Mr. Johnson will assume the CEO position on Nov. 1, 2011, and report to Mr. Ullman, who will become executive chairman. Mr. Johnson will also join the Company's Board of Directors, effective Aug. 1, 2011.

Mr. Johnson, 52, has served for the past 11 years as senior vice president of retail at Apple Inc., where he led its retail strategy, which from its start in 2001 now numbers over 300 stores in the U.S. and abroad. He joined Apple after 15 years at Target Corporation, where he was a key merchandising executive.

Mr. Ullman said, "I am delighted that Ron is joining our Board and the Company, and look forward to working with him as we continue to transform the jcpenney brand. He is widely recognized and highly regarded in the retail industry for his creativity and innovation, his commitment to empowering employees to deliver an unparalleled customer experience, and to making stores exciting places where people love to shop. His tremendous accomplishments at Apple and Target speak to his great consumer merchandising, marketing and operational talent."

Thomas J. Engibous, lead director of J. C. Penney Company's Board, said, "The Company has made outstanding strides under Mike Ullman's leadership and it has great potential ahead thanks to the Long Range Plan for growth he and the management team developed and are executing, which includes top management succession planning. The progress made under Mike's leadership is reflected in the Company's ability to attract an executive of Ron Johnson's talent and track record as it continues to focus on achieving its objective of becoming America's most exciting place to shop. We look forward to Ron joining our Board and then to his assuming the chief executive role as he, Mike and their team work towards achieving the Company's goals."

Mr. Johnson said, "I've always dreamed of leading a major retail company as CEO, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help J. C. Penney re-imagine what I believe to be the single greatest opportunity in American retailing today, the Department Store. I have tremendous confidence in J. C. Penney's future and look forward to working with Mike Ullman, the Executive Board and the Company's 150,000 associates to transform the way America shops."

As a demonstration of his confidence in J. C. Penney's long-term potential, Mr. Johnson requested and has committed to make a personal investment of $50 million in the Company through the purchase, at fair market value, of 7 1/2-year warrants on 7.257 million shares ofJ. C. Penney Company stock. The warrants cannot be sold or hedged for the first six years of their term and have a strike price of $29.92, the closing price of the stock on the business day prior to Mr. Johnson's commitment to purchase the warrants.

Apple Says Samsung Request for the iPhone 5, iPad 3 is an 'Attempt to Harass'

No comments:

Apple's says Samsung's request to see the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 is an 'improper attempt to harass '.

Samsung's Motion to Compel is an improper attempt to harass Apple by demanding production of extremely sensitive trade secrets that have no relevance to Apple's likelihood of success on its infringement claims or to a preliminary injunction motion. Apple made a compelling showing in its motion to expedite discovery that Apple needs samples of products that Samsung has already announced, distributed, and described, so that Apple can evaluate whether to file a preliminary injunction motion against those products, which look strikingly similar to the distinctive trade dress of Apple's current products. Samsung has made no such showing about Apple's future products. Therefore, Samsung's Motion to Compel should be denied

FOSS Patents has a nice analysis of each parties position on the matter. Apple's position seems a bit stronger especially considering it has never announced or even hinted that the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 exist.
