Launch of 'The Daily' iPad Newspaper Planned for January

No comments:

Rupert Murdoch plans to launch his tablet newspaper, 'The Daily', the week of January 17th, according to MediaMemo sources.

Given that News Corp. has hired dozens of blabby journalists for the Daily, and interviewed many more, lots of other details about the app/service have leaked out already: It will come out daily, it will sell for 99 cents a week, it will use lots of video and it will have cool multimedia bells and whistles, including some kind of 3-D effect that lots of people are very excited about. And Apple CEO Steve Jobs may or may not participate in a launch event.

It was previously rumored that Apple would hold a press conference this month at which time 'The Daily' would be unveiled alongside a new "push" subscription feature from Apple. It seems as though things may have been delayed until early next year.

AT&T Moving Up iPhone 4 Eligibility Dates?

No comments:

AT&T may be moving up iPhone 4 eligibility dates for some customers in an effort to lock down as many contracts as possible before Verizon gets the iPhone.

MacStories reports, "My upgrade eligibility is not up until mid-February, 2011. I know because I check, often. It’s always been that … until today. I just got an email not 30 minutes ago from AT&T and is said that I am now eligible to upgrade to the new Apple iPhone 4. Why 2 months early? Could this indeed mean Verizon could be showing off their iPhone after Christmas?"

If anyone else has noticed their eligibility status change please let us know in the comments.

Apple TV 2G Gets VNC Server Plugin

No comments:

Brandon Holland has created a VNC Server plugin for the new Apple TV that lets you access your device from anywhere.

Managed to find some time to work on Apple TV stuff. Finished a quick and dirty vnc server plugin for the 2G that I call "Exposed". It's method for getting screen data isn't great and lacks some effects and animation, but it does work without HDMI plugged in. So if you want to try it out, grab Exposed and place it in the Lowtide Appliances directory. I think it is also important to note that this does require a jailbroken AppleTV 2G running Dustin Howett's beigelist. Crazy busy with work, but I'm hoping to finish my site redesign by the new year. Peace.

You can download 'Exposed' from this link...

Apple Overlooks AMOLED for iPad Due to Insufficient Supplies?

No comments:

Panel makers say a major reason Apple will overlook AMOLED for the iPad is due to insufficient supplies, according to a DigiTimes report.

With backlight unit (BLU) makers set to be suppliers for the second generation of iPad, AMOLED will still be unable to enter Apple's supply chain. Panel makers have noted that a major reason for Apple to overlook AMOLED for iPads is insufficient supplies. SMD's current capacity for 2- to 4.2-inch AMOLED panels are not enough to meet the demand from Samsung's Galaxy-S, Google Nexus-S, Nokia and HTC.

Moreover, the current AMOLED technology is not suitable for volume production of 7- to 11-inch tablet PC panels, and the mass production cost will not be able to compete with TFT-LCD panels.

Apple is expected to produce the iPad 2 is quantities topping six million units a month.

FBI Evidence Reveals 'At Apple You Can Get Fired For Saying K48'

No comments:

A conversation, secretly taped by the FBI, captured a Flextronics director named Walter Shimoon spilling Apple secrets to an an unnamed "cooperative witness" (CW-2) employed by a hedge fund.

According to FORTUNE the conversation took place on Oct. 1, 2009. Shimoon and three co-defendants were arrested today on several changes of wire fraud and securities fraud.

The indictment reveals some interesting information:
● Apple, he is heard telling CW-2, was "coming out next year" with a new iPhone that's "gonna have two cameras ... It'll be a neat phone because it's gonna have a five-megapixel auto-focus camera and it will have a VGA forward-facing videoconferencing camera." Apple announced the iPhone 4 -- with its two cameras -- eight months later.
● Then he is heard telling CW-2 that "they [Apple] have a code name for something new ... It's totally ... It's a new category altogether... It doesn't have a camera, what I figured out. So I speculated that it's probably a reader. ... Something like that. Um, let me tell you, it's a very secretive program. ... It's called K, K48. That's the internal name. So, you can get, at Apple you can get fired for saying K48." The iPad -- code named K48 -- was unveiled four months later.

Airfoil Tool for Streaming Audio Gets Major Upgrade

No comments:

Rogue Amoeba has announced Airfoil 4, a major upgrade to their tool for streaming audio around the house. Originally designed to send any audio to Apple's Airport Express router (which supports only iTunes by default), Airfoil has grown to support streaming to the Apple TV, as well as other computers running Airfoil Speakers (on Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux), and even to iOS devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Airfoil sends any audio, everywhere.

Airfoil Speakers for Mac IconThe Airfoil 4 update starts with a big update to Airfoil Speakers, which enables you to receive audio on other computers in your house. Just run Airfoil Speakers, and Airfoil will send audio from your Mac to any machine on your network!

With version 4, Airfoil Speakers can initiate a connection back to Airfoil, so you can tune in to audio without dashing back to the Mac running Airfoil. Even better, Airfoil Speakers offers remote control of selected sources, including iTunes and Pulsar. Pause playback, or skip tracks, from across the room or across the house. Airfoil Speakers also features an updated interface, which shows useful metadata about the audio being played, including track information and album artwork when available. Couple that with the beautiful new level meters and the remote controls, and Airfoil Speakers is one powerful little companion to Airfoil.

Airfoil Video Player, the second of Airfoil's companion applications, has also received a major update with version 4. Using Airfoil Video Player, you can watch video on your Mac while audio plays through any remote speakers, all in sync. It's always supported local files and DVDs, but this upgrade brings support for watching web video as well!

With Airfoil Video Player's new Web mode, you can watch TV shows on Hulu or movies via Netflix. Play them right on your Mac's gorgeous screen and send the audio out to your remote speakers. Airfoil Video Player will sync it all up, for the perfect viewing experience. This update also overhauls the player for local files and DVDs to give better control.

Airfoil 4 also offers many other improvements, from a streamlined interface to better audio grabbing from applications like Google Chrome, as well as all System Audio. And when the new crop of third-party AirPlay receivers from companies like iHome and JBL finally arrive, Airfoil 4 will be ready to support them as well. All this combines to make Airfoil 4 the best version of Airfoil yet!

Pricing and Availability:
Airfoil 4 is available immediately for Mac OS X 10.6 and up. A free trial is available for download, and new users can purchase Airfoil through our online store for just $25. Owners of older versions of Airfoil can upgrade for just $10. While in its trial state, Airfoil will overlay noise on all transmissions longer than 10 minutes.

Nokia Files More Lawsuits Against Apple in Germany, UK, Netherlands

No comments:

Nokia announced it has filed claims in the UK High Court, Dusseldorf and Mannheim District Courts in Germany and the District Court of the Hague, Netherlands, alleging that Apple infringes Nokia patents in many of its products sold in these countries, including iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

"These actions add 13 further Nokia patents to the 24 already asserted against Apple in the US International Trade Commission and the Delaware and Wisconsin Federal courts," said Paul Melin, vice president, Intellectual Property at Nokia. "The Nokia inventions protected by these patents include several which enable compelling user experiences. For example, using a wiping gesture on a touch screen to navigate content, or enabling access to constantly changing services with an on-device app store, both filed more than ten years before the launch of the iPhone."

Nokia's filing in the UK covers 4 Nokia patents related to touch user interface, on-device app stores, signal noise suppression and modulator structures.

Nokia's filing in Dusseldorf, Germany covers 7 Nokia patents related to touch user interface, antenna structures, messaging functionality and chipsets.

Nokia's filing in Mannheim, Germany covers 5 Nokia patents related to on-device app stores, caller ID, display illumination and the integration of multiple radios.

Nokia's filing in the Hague, Netherlands covers 2 Nokia patents related to signal noise suppression and data card functionality.

None of the asserted patents have been declared essential to any wireless communication standard.

Apple counter-sued Nokia's original lawsuit last December.
