Apple, Microsoft, EMC, and Oracle Consortium Purchase 882 Novell Patents

No comments:

Apple, Microsoft, EMC, and Oracle have formed a new company to jointly purchase 882 patents from Novell, according to Foss Patents.

Three weeks ago I already commented on the recent announcement of Attachmate acquiring Novell and the sale of 882 Novell patents, in exchange for $450 million, to CPTN Holdings LLC. At the time, the full list of CPTN Holdings LLC partners was not known. The entity was described as a "consortium organized by Microsoft."

It's interesting to see these four very different companies cooperating to make this purchase. Hopefully, a list of patents acquired will be published soon.

*thanks iclarified*

This is really big news, if you guys don't relies these are competing companies coming together to purchase these patents.. It will be interesting to see how they will use these patents.

Apple Expects iPad 2 to Ship Over 6 Million Units a Month

No comments:

Apple has tapped two new touch panel suppliers to meet the expected increase in demand for its upcoming tablet, according to Digitimes.

Apple has reportedly added two additional touch panel makers, Chimei Innolux and Cando, to its touch panel supplier list for iPad 2 in addition to current suppliers Wintek, Sintek Photronics and TPK Touch Solutions due to expanding market for the tablet PCs, according to industry sources.

Apple's orders of iPad 2 are expected to top six million units a month compared to a volume of four million units a quarter for the current version, pushing Apple to expand the number of touch panel suppliers, the sources noted.

Digitimes also notes that their sources haven't heard anything about orders for a 7-inch touch panel.

Webout Streams HTML5 Video to Apple TV via AirPlay

No comments:

Webout is a web browser application for iPhone and iPad that can stream HTML5 to your Apple TV using AirPlay.

Ever wanted to display a website on a TV, projector or monitor from your iPad or iPhone? Or wished Safari could show you the article you're reading without ads and other annoying page elements? webout lets you do that with minimal settings to configure and ease-of-use in mind. Plug in your VGA adapter any time to activate the screen mirroring, tap on the action button to choose a way to get your web 'out', or rotate the device to see in landscape.

What's New In This Version:
- Stream HTML5 video to Apple TV with AirPlay. Safari will only stream audio via AirPlay, but webout can stream video as well in this update. For most videos, just tap play on the video within the page, then activate the stream via the action menu. It's a little spotty on the iPhone since a lot of websites deliver video to your device not inline for the smaller display, but it works great on the iPad. Requires 4.2, a device that supports multitasking and the latest OS version on your Apple TV.
- Fixed a bug where webout incorrectly disallowed sending a page to safari
- Made the button tap areas slightly larger for big, American thumbs
- New icons (for a while...)

You can purchase webout from the App Store for $0.99.

Next iPhone Could Feature Photo Realistic 3D Graphics

No comments:

The next iPhone could see photo realistic 3D graphics thanks to the acquisition of Caustic Graphics by Imagination Technologies.

Apple owns a 9.5% stake in Imagination Technologies, the company who provides the video chips for the iPhone. Yesterday it announced a $27 million (£17 million) deal that promises to bring photo-realistic 3D to consumer mobile devices.

Speaking exclusively to TechRadar, Imagination Technolgies' PR Director, David Harold said of the deal:

"Well, we don't want to tip our hand but this acquisition opens up the potential for highly photorealistic imagery to reach new real-time applications and markets, including consumer, not possible previously, via its integration with POWERVR, which is the de facto standard for mobile and embedded graphics.

"We have a proven track record of disrupting markets by bringing new and high-end technologies to consumer and embedded products: ray tracing is a key additional technology that traditionally has been regarded as the exclusive domain of specialised markets and non real-time applications. We will change that."

"We would not have acquired this [Caustic] technology if we did not believe we could get it into handsets," he added, commenting on the new deal.

Flash Player 10.2 to Reduce CPU Usage Up to 10x

No comments:

Adobe evangelist John Nack posted today saying the new Flash Player 10.2 (currently in beta) could reduce CPU usage by up to 10x.

The new Flash Player 10.2 (download the beta) offers a new, video-playback-optimized mode called Stage Video. Building on top of the GPU acceleration added earlier this year, Stage Video can leverage complete hardware acceleration of the video rendering pipeline, from video decoding to scaling/blitting, enabling best-in-class playback performance. Stage Video can dramatically decrease processor usage and enables higher frame rates, reduced memory usage, and greater pixel fidelity and quality.

Nash notes that the new Flash player won't automatically improve CPU usage. It requires developers update their code. You can see a demo below. Note: sync is off...

Toshiba Denies Apple is Investing in its New LCD Plant

No comments:

Toshiba has denied rumors that Apple is investing in a new LCD production plant being built by its small- to medium-size panel subsidiary, Toshiba Mobile Display (TMD), says Digitimes.

Panel makers indicated that the rumors could make sense because of limited capacity for LTPS in the market, as well as the possibility to develop AMOLED solutions by leveraging the LTPS production line.

TMD's capacity is all for LTPS panels and it is one of the suppliers of iPhone panels. The latest iPhone panel uses an IPS panel, which is produced under an LTPS process with FFS technology, and is more energy-saving compared to other high-end panels. Supply for LTPS panels has been short since iPhone adopted LTPS.

3 U.K. to Offer Unlimited Mobile Internet Starting Tomorrow

No comments:

British mobile phone company '3', a unit of Hutchison Whampoa, based in Hong Kong, has announced it will offer unlimited mobile Internet access to U.K. customers starting tomorrow, according to the NYT.

"This is another maverick move by a known disrupter," said Emma Mohr-McClune, an analyst based in Germany for Current Analysis, a research firm in Sterling, Virginia. "I don’t think this is going to set a trend, but if 3 takes market share, it might."

3 has six million phone customers in total, including about 1.5 million mobile Internet customers. The company’s basic mobile broadband package, called The One Plan, costs £25, or $39.50, a month and, before the announcement Tuesday, limited Internet downloads to 1 gigabyte a month. Customers over the limit had to pay 10 pence for every additional downloaded megabyte.

3 is also allowing customers to tether. Hopefully this catches on with the other mobile networks.

Apple Releases iOS 4.2.1 for Apple TV 2

No comments:

Apple has released iOS 4.2.1 for the new Apple TV which was previously running iOS 4.2. The new firmware is build number 8C154.

Strangely although the previous ipsw was labeled iOS 4.2 the Apple TV reported a lower firmware version for many. It's not clear if this update corrects the discrepancy and brings the version numbers back in line.

It's not known yet if the new firmware brings any additional features.

You can download the update by going to software update on your Apple TV.
