Apple has released a new iOS 4.2 GM Seed to developers with modifications to the iPad build.

Take a look at the images below and you will see Apple has changed the iPad build of iOS 4.2 from 8C134 to 8C134b. It's thought that a serious Wi-Fi issue affecting the iPad made this new build necessary.

Time's 50 Best Inventions of 2010 Includes iPad, Square, Flipboard

No comments:

Time's 50 Best Inventions of 2010 includes the Apple iPad, the Square payment platform, and the Flipboard iPad app.

Apple iPad
Apple is the first company that designed finger-friendly hardware and software from scratch rather than stuffing a PC into a keyboardless case. When it calls the results "magical" and "revolutionary," it's distorting reality only slightly. One analyst says the iPad is the fastest-selling nonphone gizmo in consumer-electronics history.

Flipboard for iPad
The killer iPad app Flipboard ends the chaos by grabbing updates, photos and links from your friends and other interesting people, then reformatting everything in a wonderfully browsable, magazine-like format. You can also add feeds from your favorite blogs and websites and share items with friends via social media and e-mail. With its oversize images and crisp typography, it's a glossy digital publication that feels as if it's been edited by your pals just for you.

Square
With the aid of a tiny magnetic card reader that attaches to a smart phone, Square lets anyone process credit cards. It might not do away with paper entirely — plenty of people still prefer cash — but you certainly don't need to wait for a receipt: sign on the screen, and Square sends a copy straight to e-mail.

Hit this link to view the full list.

Power Saving Gets Even Smarter

No comments:

St. Clair Software has announced an update to App Tamer, its Macintosh utility that automatically pauses applications to deliver more efficient CPU usage and increased battery life. App Tamer version 1.0.2 increases its intelligence, improves compatibility and reduces its own CPU usage.

What's New:
App Tamer 1.0.2 will intelligently monitor applications, making sure its AutoStop feature does not interrupt downloads in your web browser or stop iTunes while it's playing music. The user interface is smarter, showing you more information and allowing you to turn off AutoStop for a certain amount of time. This version does more but consumes less CPU time, and also addresses a number of issues reported by App Tamer users. These include errors in CPU usage readings when running under Mac OS 10.5, interactions with OS X's spindump utility, and better compatibility with Parallels Desktop and the Finder.

Pricing and Availability:
App Tamer 1.0.2 is a free update for registered users. It is $14.95 (USD) for Mac users who have not purchased it yet. Please see the St. Clair Software web site for a full change log and additional feature information.

AirPlay Functionality Pulled From the iPhone 3G?

No comments:

It looks like Apple may have pulled AirPlay support from the iPhone 3G, according to a 9to5Mac report.

After speaking to multiple developers and users testing out the iOS 4.2 betas, we have determined that AirPlay did in fact work on the iPhone 3G at one point, meaning the AirPlay functionality was definitely removed from Apple’s two-year-old iPhone at its GM stage. The reason this is an issue is because Apple states, even on their own website, that AirPlay is supported on ALL iOS 4 devices.

Augmented Reality Comes To The New iPod Touch

No comments:

Vito Technology has announced a birthday version of its best seller app Star Walk - 5 Stars Astronomy Guide. This is a revolutionary update that brings augmented reality to the new gen iPod touch. For the first time ever iPod touch fellows can enjoy the enhanced features of Star Walk even without a digital compass. iPhone 4 users will not feel left out. Real-time satellite tracking, calibration tool, TelRad, and new content make Star Walk one of the most accurate, precise and interactive app for anyone who has ever wondered where the Big Dipper is!

The idea behind iPod touch augmented reality is very simple - when you know your location and have the gyro to detect movements, all you need to replace the compass is to tell your iPod where the Sun is. Simply point the built-in iPod camera towards any sky object, for instance the Sun (or the Moon) and swipe the app generated sky to match the real one, and voila... you have a full functioning software compass which has even more precision than the one in an iPhone or iPad. iPhone 4 compass can be calibrated as well.

Another major addition in this update is satellites tracking. They are right there in the sky among the stars. This lets you figure out whether that white dot in the sky is a star or a satellite and exactly which star or satellite it is. It lets you find out exactly when the ISS will by flying over your head and where in the sky you should look for it. Reacher information and more satellites (in addition to over 150 in this version) are planned for the future updates.

As Star Walk is often used for educational purposes in schools and universities as well as astronomy clubs, this update features the ability to connect a secondary screen or a projector to use the app as a visual aid.

Another step towards professional use is newly added TelRad feature and new content. TelRad measures angular distance between nearby stars and helps to find celestial objects with a telescope. Content has been 'enhanced with new catalogue of deep sky objects (NGC), new constellations, galaxies and nebulae.

On the fun side, the birthday update brings us a freshened up design and enhances social network integration. Completely redesigned constellation pictures add more magic to the stargazing experience which you can now share with your friends and family via Facebook and Twitter. Plus, we have added search by common names of constellations to the English version.

Pricing and Availability:
Star Walk is available for iPhone and iPod touch for $2.99.
Star Walk for iPad costs $4.99.

No comments:

Readdle has announced the release and immediate availability of Scanner Pro 3.0, a major update to their popular iPhone application that transforms the device into a portable scanner. Using Scanner Pro 3.0, iPhone owners scan multi-page documents lightning fast thanks to a new, specially designed interface. The new black and white mode, with reduced file sizes, enables users to e-mail documents with twice as many pages as before.

KavaServices 4.2 Released

No comments:

KavaSoft has released KavaServices 4.2, a collection of useful commands that transforms the Services menu in Mac OS X Snow Leopard. KavaServices can translate, search the web, move and copy files, encode for HTML, calculate, convert units, sort, change case, execute commands, and much more. KavaServices 4.2 adds support for translating text between 58 different languages.

Services replace the selected text in place, without the need to switch to a different program or copy and paste. For example, to translate text from French in a document, web page or email message, simply select the text and choose Translate from French from the Services menu. The text will then be replaced with its English translation.

Snow Leopard's redesigned Services menu is context-sensitive and fully customizable. You can choose exactly which commands you'd like to include in System Preferences, keeping the menu tidy and clutter-free. KavaServices' preferences let you add menu commands for any combination of languages.

KavaServices translates text between Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Basque, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, French, Galician, Georgian, German, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malay, Maltese, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, Welsh, and Yiddish.

KavaServices can search a variety of websites. You can pull up a Wikipedia article, search Google or Yahoo, buy things on Amazon or eBay, locate a place on a map, connect on Facebook or MySpace, or watch a video on YouTube. The Visit Website command goes to the main website for whatever you've selected, just like magic.

KavaServices helps webmasters prepare content for the web by encoding special characters into HTML entities. It can convert accented letters, characters in other alphabets and special punctuation marks for display on the web. It can also encode URL links and convert accented text to plain ASCII.

KavaServices can calculate mathematical expressions, including basic arithmetic, trigonometry, arithmetic with scientific units, base conversions, and more. It can also convert currencies, area, energy, power, pressure, speed, temperature, time, volume and weight.

Text processing commands let you convert text to lowercase, uppercase or title case. You can sort lines alphabetically, with the option to remove duplicates, and remove blank lines.

KavaServices also offers a gateway to the Terminal in any application. Select a command, hit a keystroke, and the command will be replaced by its result as if you had typed it in the Terminal.

Pricing and Availability:
KavaServices costs $25 (USD). The demo version offers a seven day free trial.

iAds Has Helped Its Competition

No comments:

Apple's launch of iAds into the mobile advertising space has actually helped its competition, according to an article by the WSJ.

Instead of losing business, ad executives say Apple's entry into the market is giving them a boost. That's because iAds has gotten big marketers to pay attention to mobile advertising in the first place

Apple has "brought sexiness to mobile ads," said Carnet Williams, chief executive of San Francisco-based Sprout Inc., which helps create and deliver interactive ads. Mr. Williams said it has gotten roughly four times as many calls from publishers and agencies since Apple turned the spotlight on iAds.

The WSJ also reports that Apple has been addressing the initial complaints about iAds by beefing up its staff, reducing the time it takes to produce the ads, and loosening its tight control.

Two days ago Apple announced its launch of iAds in Japan. The company is expected to continue expanding iAds into Europe.

Oracle and Apple Announce OpenJDK Project for Mac OS X

No comments:

Oracle and Apple today announced the OpenJDK project for Mac OS X. Apple will contribute most of the key components, tools and technology required for a Java SE 7 implementation on Mac OS X, including a 32-bit and 64-bit HotSpot-based Java virtual machine, class libraries, a networking stack and the foundation for a new graphical client. OpenJDK will make Apple's Java technology available to open source developers so they can access and contribute to the effort.

"We are excited to welcome Apple as a significant contributor in the growing OpenJDK community," said Hasan Rizvi, Oracle's senior vice president of Development. "The availability of Java on Mac OS X plays a key role in the cross-platform promise of the Java platform. The Java developer community can rest assured that the leading edge Java environment will continue to be available on Mac OS X in the future. Combined with last month's announcement of IBM joining the OpenJDK, the project now has the backing of three of the biggest names in software."

"We're delighted to be working with Oracle to insure that there continues to be a great version of Java on the Mac," said Bertrand Serlet, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. "The best way for our users to always have the most up to date and secure version of Java will be to get it directly from Oracle."

Apple also confirmed that Java SE 6 will continue to be available from Apple for Mac OS X Snow Leopard and the upcoming release of Mac OS X Lion. Java SE 7 and future versions of Java for Mac OS X will be available from Oracle.

Java is a general purpose software development platform that is specifically designed to be open and enable application developers to "write once, run anywhere." The Java platform is most widely used in business software, web and mobile applications.

iOS 4.2 Delayed Due to Serious Wi-Fi Problem?

No comments:

Apple may have delayed the release of iOS 4.2 until November 16th due to a serious Wi-Fi issue.

MacStories has heard from a reliable source who confirms the last-minute problem.

Wifi issues came up with the GM build Apple released on November 1st. From what we’re hearing, Apple may release a second GM build as early as tomorrow to deal with WiFi issues. This will delay the release for at least a week while it is tested, but may not get public release until the following week as it appears Apple will be testing it vigorously. iOS 4.2 should, however, come out before Thanksgiving.

iPhoneHellas, who has been accurate in their previous predictions, says the firmware will be released on November 16th.
