Apple is Now Selling iBooks Gift Cards

No comments:

Apple has started selling iBooks Gift Cards in its retail stores, according to an iLounge Report.

Spotted by iLounge in a Washington, D.C.-area Apple Store, the cards feature a solid color gradient background with the iBooks icon centered on top. Based on an Apple Support Discussions thread from earlier in the year, it appears as though users were able to purchase standard iTunes Gift Cards for use in the iBookstore; the new cards remove any ambiguity customers may have had about whether or not an iTunes GC would be usable in the iBookstore, and will likely be popular add-ons to those purchasing iPads as a gift.

Steve Jobs Says 'AirPrint Has Not Been Pulled'

No comments:

Steve Jobs has replied to an iPad customer concerned over a recent rumor that AirPrint support has been pulled from Mac OS X and Windows.

-----
As a release-day purchaser of an iPad, I was elated when you revealed iOS 4.2 would support AirPrint. Now comes reports AirPrint support has been pulled from 4.2. Between announcements/assurances of the white iPhone, and now the pulling of AirPrint, is Apple going to lose credibility and become known for announcing "vaporware"?
-----

AirPrint has not been pulled. Don't believe everything you read.

-----

Unfortunately, Jobs' response doesn't shed any light on the validity of the rumor. The person who sent the email was mistakenly under the impression that AirPrint was removed from iOS 4.2. This was never suggested. Rather it's support for AirPrint from Mac OS X and Windows that may have been dropped for the present.

Gift Planning App With Comparison Shopping

No comments:

Food for Benjamin has introduced No More Socks 1.0 for iOS, their versatile gift-planning app that features the ability to save the results of comparison shopping. Designed to organize gift-giving all year round, the app allows the user to easily create detailed lists of gift recipients, event dates, gift ideas, online retailers, traditional stores, specific gift items with prices, and the gifts remaining to be purchased within a chosen period of time. All lists and bookmarks may be exported from the iOS device to a computer for more convenient online ordering.

On launch, the splash page displays stick-up notes of various colors, posted on a refrigerator door. Each note accesses a function, including Events, People, Shopping, Ideas Pad, and Help. The app differentiates between two types of event: personal events for occasions that involve a single individual (e.g. birthday), and group events where more than one person must be considered (e.g. Christmas). The user can set a budget for each member of a group event, and the total budget displayed for the event is the sum of all the individual budgets. The app keeps track of items purchased and the amount of the total budget used. Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and birthdays are available as presets to make event creation quick, or the name and date of the event may be entered manually.

Touch-activating the People function of No More Socks permits the user to pick a name or names from their main iOS contact list, or create a new entry in the app. Once created, each person's entry may include their full name, birthdate, their photo, gift ideas for that person, past gifts given and any events that have been entered using the Events function. There is also a toggle switch for sending a birthday push reminder (iOS 4 and later required). Gift Ideas and Past Gifts can be accessed from the Gifts section of the person's page. This allows the user to keep a running list of ideas for each person and to keep a reference of gifts bought in the past. When adding a gift idea the user may add an item already listed in the Ideas Pad or enter a new idea from scratch.

Feature Highlights:
* Create Events, add People, add Gifts, go Shopping - all from within the app
* Quickly enter a note or a photo at any time with the Ideas Pad
* Keep a list of ideas for each person all year round
* Search the web for the ideal gift
* Create bookmarks to retailers' websites who offer gift items of interest
* Get everything needed from a store in one visit with Smart Shopping Lists
* Export Shopping Lists, including bookmarks, to any computer via email
* Keep track of all gifts purchased in previous years
* Get reminders about friends' birthdays
* Import contacts from any address book

The Ideas Pad serves as a notepad for any gift ideas the user may have that aren't related to a particular person or event, or when they are short of time and need to make a quick note they intend to file later. It encourages quick-entry by asking only for a name and optional photo, but other information can be added by tapping the More Details button.

When adding gifts to the app the user may enter the idea, a budget, a picture, notes, and possible sources for purchasing the item. Touching the Add Retailer button brings up a comprehensive, scrollable list of online and offline retailers, any of which may be selected to begin shopping. The app includes a built-in directory of popular merchants, and performs a Google search to find additional merchants. The app automatically adds new retailers for quick access next time. For shoppers preferring the convenience of a large screen and keyboard when purchasing, all retailer bookmarks from No More Socks may be emailed to any computer, complete with notes and prices.

Selecting the Shopping function from the main menu brings up the shopping lists: organized lists of the retailer bookmarks that the user has added to their gift ideas. Four options are available: All Shopping, Online Shopping, Offline Shopping, and Past Purchases. Selecting All Shopping displays a list of all items yet to be purchased for events within a user-defined timeframe, which is easily set via a simple slider. A button allows the user to show and hide their secondary choices. The Shopping List shows a red check for gifts remaining to be purchased and a green check for items completed. The user toggles between the two with a quick tap. Shopping Lists are grouped by retailer so the user can see what needs buying from each. All related information such as notes, budget, retailers, price and the merchant's web page is available within one or two taps. If desired, the user may complete the entire online transaction from within the app, and check the item off the list. As above,
all information can be emailed to any computer.

"We looked carefully at all the gift planning apps on the App Store and found a few features missing from all of them that would be very useful to users." stated company Co-Founder Duncan Abbott. "I spent months along with my wife Jo and our 16-month old Benjy creating No More Socks. We're very proud of the result, and we're certain that iOS device owners will find that our app helps put the fun back into gift-giving."

Pricing and Availability:
No More Socks 1.0 is available at the special introductory price of $0.99 (USD) through the App Store in the Productivity category. Review copies are available upon request.

A Clearer Picture of the iPad 2

No comments:

Darrell Etherington of GigaOM has published an article on The Street outlining what features he expects for the iPad 2.

Here's the run down:
● Both a front and back camera. The front one being VGA and the back one being 5MP.
● Two dock connectors. One for vertical and one for horizontal positioning.
● Slimmer and lighter. Aluminum back unless Apple is ready with its nitride coating for stainless steel.
● A4 processor. Probably 1.5GHz. At least 512MB of RAM
● Retina Display
● Double the storage to 128GB.

*thanks iclarified*

Idk I think the iPad is at a good size, any thinner and idk if I could trust the durability. I have dropped my iPad many times and any thinner and idk I would look to fragile, similar to the iPod touch, they keep getting thinner and thinner idk how durable they could be any thinner. I would love to see at least 1gb of ram ( it's a tablet it should have at least double the ram of current iPhone (512mb) ), a 1.5GHz or faster processor ( similar argument to ram, should be faster than current iPhone), and personally I don't need a camera on my iPad, I have a iPhone 4 for a reason if I need to FaceTime someone I use my iPhone and I don't need anything else with a camera. The only other thing I would like to see is a better and louder speaker system...

What would you like to see in the next iPad? Let us know by leaving a comment.

RIM to Sell PlayBook Tablet for Under $500

No comments:

RIM has announced that it plans to sell the PlayBook tablet for under $500, according to a BusinessWeek report.

Research In Motion Ltd., the maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, said it will begin selling a tablet computer in North America in the first quarter for "under" $500 as it takes on Apple Inc.'s iPad.

"The product will be very competitively priced," Co-Chief Executive Officer Jim Balsillie said in an interview in Seoul today, declining to be more specific. Sales of the BlackBerry Playbook, unveiled in September, will expand globally from the second quarter, he said.

While the iPad starts at $500 it has a considerably larger screen at 9.7" compared to the 7" PlayBook. RIM recently demoed the tablet at the Adobe MAX conference.

Apple Cancels AirPrint Support for Mac and Windows?

No comments:

Apple may have canceled support for AirPrint through Mac and Windows, according to a MacStories report.

"AirPrint is Apple's powerful new printing architecture that matches the simplicity of iOS—no set up, no configuration, no printer drivers and no software to download," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly to an HP ePrint printer or to a printer shared on a Mac or PC."

We have been told from a few Mac developers that a few days ago Apple removed all the references to printing via OS X 10.6.5 and PCs both from Readme files and other online documentation posted in the iOS developer center. It seems like all that’s now mentioned in the release notes are the aforementioned HP networked printers, as if the shared printing option never existed.

A developer says after contacting Apple's Tech Support they confirmed the feature "cancelled".

"Support for AirPrint on Windows and Mac has been cancelled. We will be in contact with you if another opportunity arises in the future."

John Gruber on Apple's Pricing Advantage

No comments:

John Gruber from Daring Fireball examines Apple's pricing advantage with the iPad and why this is not the case with Macs vs. PCs.

PCs, especially historically, were compared based on technical specs. An awful lot of PCs have been sold to people who never even looked at the enclosure — only the specs. That’s not how the game is played in consumer electronics. Nobody knows what kind of CPU they have in their phones. (Where by “nobody”, I mean “no regular people”.) Apple doesn’t even publish CPU specs for iOS devices, nor publish how much RAM they contain.

With computers, again, it’s fair to say that the typical Mac costs more than the typical Windows PC. That’s not true for mobile devices, which means Apple gets to compete mostly on factors like design, user experience, and branding. In short, the nascent mobile computing market has much more in common with the traditional consumer electronics market than it does with the PC industry, and that works very much in Apple’s favor.

You can read the entire article at this link...

New DMX channel groups make it easier to edit multiple channels at once, while DMX soloing allows the user to play back one or more DMX channels independently.

"We are excited to work with major studios to improve our DMX and 3D stereoscopic interfaces," said Dyami Caliri, President of DZED Systems.

Pricing and Availability:
Dragon Stop Motion 2.3 is priced at $275.00 (USD) for a single-user license, or $225 (USD) per license in quantities of five or more. A trial license is available and valid for 30 days and limited to 50 frames per take. Version 2.3 is a recommended upgrade for all customers.

Apple to Release Mac OS X 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 Today, iOS 4.2 on Friday?

No comments:

Apple is planning to release Mac OS X 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 tomorrow and iOS 4.2 on Friday, according to a MacStories source.

An inside source at AT&T told MacStories that Apple is planning to release iOS 4.2, a major OS update for iPhones, iPods and iPads, on Friday November 12th at 10 AM PST. We also learned that updates to iTunes and Mac OS X will be released sometime tomorrow — iTunes will be reaching version 10.10.0 (simply called iTunes 10.1) and Mac OS X will jump to the long-awaited 10.6.5 version.

iOS 4.2 was reportedly delayed from its originally planned October 26th release date because of a Japanese character bug.

The Gorillamobile for iPhone 4 combines the protection of a durable, always-on bumper case with the hands-free positioning capabilities of a Joby tripod.
