Convert your old iMac into something more useful

No comments:

Got an old school iMac kicking around? Why not turn it into a weirdo single-use object? That's what Klaus Diebel has done with a number of old iMacs, turning them into iPhone docks, subwoofers, coffee makers and more.

Want to get one of these strange things for yourself? Klaus will be happy to do it for you. Just pick what you want to convert it to and he'll take it from there.

Softbank unveils glasses-free 3D smartphones

No comments:

Taking a break from promoting all things iPhone/iPad, Softbank recently unveiled two new 3D ready smartphones called the Galapagos 003SH and 005SH (brand cousins to the Sharp Galapagos ebook reader).

According to Softbank, the touchscreen phones require no special glasses to view 3D content, feature a 9.6 megapixel camera, electronic wallet and will go on sale in December. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the announcement was the Steve Jobsian manner in which Softbank head Masayoshi Son prowled the stage holding court as a rare English translator interpreted his speech for online viewers. You can see Japan's version of the reality distortion field courtesy Son-san here

24x7digital Releases TimesTables 4.0

No comments:

24x7digital has announced TimesTables 4.0, an educational title for the iPhone and iPod touch which teaches the basics of multiplication with an emphasis on learning the times tables and becoming very fast at recalling multiplication facts from 0 x 0 to 12 x 12.

TimesTables has four distinct learning modes: a times tables grid, flash cards, multiplier list flash cards, and an animated apple orchard. The 12 x 12 grid shows multiplication facts in a table giving the student a visual representation of the times tables. Students can tap each fact to view and listen to the multiplication product. The flash cards allow a student to train themselves on their multiplication facts by swiping through flash cards and tapping the cards to view and listen to the answers. The animated apple orchard teaches the concept of multiplication by showing a number of trees each with a number of apples. Students can tap the trees to skip-count the apples in groups.

TimesTables also has a game mode which tests the student's recall of multiplication facts with timed drills of sequential or random multiplication problems. The unique keyboard entry forces the student to enter the correct answer instead of choosing from a set of answers. Scores are tracked for multiple players and displayed on a high score board. All settings are stored on a per-player basis to facilitate learning by all members of a family. Apple Game Center users can compare scores on the global leaderboard.

Features:
* 12 x 12 Talking Multiplication Grid
* Realistic flash cards which can be swiped and flipped
* Apple orchard teaches multiplication concepts
* Timed drills for sequential or random multiplication problems
* Multiple player profiles track high scores and individual settings
* Apple Game Center Leaderboards

Pricing and Availability:
TimesTables 4.0 is only $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Education category. TimesTables Free, a free ad-sponsored version which goes up to 6 x 6, is also available.

Steve Jobs Moves Up 40 Spots on Forbes Most Powerful People List

No comments:

Steve Jobs has moved up 40 spots on Forbes World's Most Powerful People list. In 2009, Jobs was ranked number 57. This year he is ranked number 17.

Insanely creative Apple cofounder transforms multibillion-dollar industry every few years. First, personal computers with Apple II, Macintosh; then film with Pixar; music (iTunes), mobile (iPhone). Now iPad is treated as messiah tablet, savior for publishing industry. Apple still sells computers, but twice as much revenue now comes from music distribution and hand-held devices. Shot past long-time rival Microsoft as world's most valuable tech company in May. Recently dined with Facebook's Mark Zuckerburg, sparking rumors the two may partner on Ping, Apple's new music social networking site. Known for his competitive streak, he dismissed Samsung and Dell's new tablets as "DOA, dead on arrival." Taunted journalists' Dell laptops at October Apple event: "Look at all those fat notebooks."

Microsoft Kinect Technology Almost Belonged to Apple

No comments:

The technology that is being used in Microsoft's Kinect Game Controller almost belonged to Apple, according to CultofMac.

Leander Kahney was on a flight home from Europe to San Francisco in June 2008 when he happened to sit beside Inon Beracha, CEO of Israeli company PrimeSense, the company behind Microsoft's 3D machine vision.

Beracha told Kahney that the technology was developed by engineers in the Israeli army and he had been hired to commercialize it. He had back-to-back meetings at all the big companies in Silicon Valley and had already signed some leading names.

In fact, he’d already had several meetings at Apple. It was the first place he and his engineers thought of. "It was the most natural place for the technology," he said.

Apple has a history of interface innovation, of course, and had recently introduced the iPhone with its paradigm-shifting multitouch UI. PrimeSense's system went one step further: It was multitouch that you didn’t even have to touch. Apple seemed like a natural fit.

Yet the initial meetings hadn’t gone so well. Obsessed with secrecy, Apple had already asked Beracha to sign a stack of crippling legal agreements and NDAs. He shook his head. Why didn’t he want to do a deal with Apple? No need. The technology was hot. He could sell it to anyone. "Apple is a pain in the ass," he said, smiling.

SmartPad 1.0 Is The Zen Of Productivity For iPad

1 comment:

Left Coast Logic has just released their first productivity planner for the iPad. Smart Pad is a Calendar, Organizer, Task Manager, integrated Notes System, and Time Tracker all wrapped in a familiar day-book planner. Smart Pad incorporates the most popular features from the company's top-ranked iPhone apps SmartTime, SmartNotes, SmartCal, and SmartPlans. It synchronizes with Google and Toodledo.

FLASH: According to TopAppCharts.com, Smart Pad ranked #9 in 'Best Debut' among all iPad apps on the App Store.

Smart Pad is unique among productivity apps because it uses their patented SmartTime logic to slot tasks into the free time between appointments in the calendar. This allows users to see and manage their entire day from one view - including events, appointments, meetings, tasks, to-do's, notes, projects and timed items. Beyond the flexible calendar and integrated tasks, Smart Pad introduces two unique features that are its heart and soul:

Day Manager is a slider bar above the task list that allows you to determine how long you want to work today. Based on your hours, tasks in the list below become highlighted or faded. Highlighted tasks can be completed today. The Day Manager allows you to actually interact with your planning. Slide the bar to the right to work more hours, and more tasks become highlighted. Or drag tasks up from the faded area to the highlighted area to make sure you get the jobs done that you need to. Highlighted tasks are then automatically shown in the Calendar as well, fit perfectly into your free time between appointments. If a task doesn't fit, it is automatically split!

HyperNotes are notes that are hyper-linked to anything. Take notes from a meeting, or jot down notes, ideas, or your outline for the great american novel. Notes are automatically connected to the facing day calendar page on which they are written - just like in a day book. Highlight any portion of the note, and it automatically creates a new appointment, task or reminder for you. All appointments or tasks created from a note, are automatically linked back to it. Now that's organization!

Smart Pad has a wealth of other features, including synchronization to both Google Calendar and Toodledo, the free online task management system. An upcoming version will feature direct sync with the iPad's calendar, which in turn synchronizes with iCal and the new Microsoft Outlook for Mac.

Pricing and Availability:
SmartPad 1.0 is only $18.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Productivity category. Promo codes are available for qualified reviewers. Please specify the website or blog you represent when making your request.
