Europeans Can Now Enjoy TV on Their iPhone via the Tizi Mobile Hotspot

No comments:

Tizi is a mobile TV Hotspot for DVB-T that brings your favourite shows directly to iPad or iPhone.

The tizi features a flexible and extendable 15cm long antenna that receives the TV signal. The handheld device weighs only 70g and has a practical shape. The latest in chip technology gives a crystal-clear picture on the touchscreen. All that, without a cable or an adaptor.

To display the picture tizi uses an integrated Hotspot that works right out-of-the-box and also guarantees a stabile picture even in some of the poorer signal areas. It's as simple as turning tizi on, choosing tizi's WiFi network and starting the app.

After 3.5 hours the Li-Ion battery can be recharged using a USB port on your laptop or even with your iPad's power adaptor. While running, tizi lets you know the current battery status using the front LED status light. Of course, red, orange and green. tizi doesn't do anything by halves when it comes to user friendliness. You get an overview of all available channels and, using the built-in programme guide, a shot at upcoming shows. Swiping lets you comfortably change channels - without any lengthy delay.

The included tizi.tv App requires iOS 4 on the iPhone (3GS and 4), iPod touch (4. Gen., 3. Gen, 32 GB) and iOS 3.2 on the iPad. tizi supports portrait and landscape mode on the iPhone and iPad and offers full multitasking abilities under iOS 4. tizi is ready for the upcoming iOS 4 on iPad.

Price and availability
tizi is available today from the equinux Online Store for only €149 euros (inc. VAT).

PayPal App Update Fixes Major Security Flaw

No comments:

PayPal has rushed out an important update to its iPhone app that fixes a major security flaw in the application, according to the WSJ.

The PayPal hole results from the app's failure to verify the digital certificate for the payment service's website. Such certificates function as electronic ID cards that let a user's device know a website is legitimate. Without that confirmation, a hacker could electronically step between a user and PayPal, pretend to be the PayPal website and gather usernames and passwords. The hacker would need to be in the same physical location as the user or have gained access to the same Wi-Fi network.

App Features:
• Send money as gifts, collect money for a group gift, or repay a friend for FREE*
• Snap a photo of a check to add money directly from your iPhone, no fees apply
• Donate to a charity and share with your friends by posting it on Facebook
• “Bump” to exchange contacts and send money
• Check your balance, withdraw funds, or view past transactions – anytime, anywhere
• As always, your information is secure with PayPal

What's New In This Version:
*** Includes an important security update. ***

MacBook Air Battery Life Reduced By Two Hours When Flash is Installed

No comments:

The MacBook Air's battery life is reduced by whopping two hours when Adobe Flash is installed, according to testing by ArsTechnica.

We did find (quite by accident) that Apple may have more reasons behind not installing Flash by default other than the stated reason of ensuring that users always have the most up-to-date version. Having Flash installed can cut battery runtime considerably—as much as 20 percent in our testing. With a handful of websites loaded in Safari, Flash-based ads kept the CPU running far more than seemed necessary, and the best time I recorded with Flash installed was just 4 hours. After deleting Flash, however, the MacBook Air ran for 6:02—with the exact same set of websites reloaded in Safari, and with static ads replacing the CPU-sucking Flash versions.

So if those added minutes of battery life are important to you, consider disabling or uninstalling Flash, especially on your new MacBook Air.

Apple's Internal Dead Pixel Policy Leaked

No comments:

Confidential Apple specifications for determining whether a LCD panel may be suitable for repair or replacement have been leaked by BGR.

The Apple Confidential specifications provided here are not for release to customers. However, they can be used in conjunction with information about the display to determine whether a customer's LCD panel may suitable for repair or replacement.

Apple Authorized Service Providers can obtain product specific pixel anomaly specifications in the Service Source documentation.

Note: If the number of pixel anomalies is within specifications, explain that to the customer. Further explain that you can replace the product, but the replacement product may have even more anomalies yet still be within specifications, and that Apple will not replace the product again if the number of anomalies in the replacement product is within specifications.

Google Adds AdSense to Admob

No comments:

Google is now letting eligible iPhone developers in the AdMob network show Google AdSense ads when AdMob is not available. This will also enable Google advertisers to extend the reach of their mobile campaigns to the thousands mobile apps in AdMob's network, such as Rovio's 'Angry Birds'.

---
We’ve worked hard to make it as easy as possible for AdMob publishers to access this new inventory. Publishers using a recent version of the SDK will not have to update their code. Reporting will integrate directly into your AdMob account, and you will continue to receive a single check from AdMob each month.

Publishers should note that they will not be able to filter the types of AdSense ads (e.g. category, URL) that run in their app. As a result, publishers who have ad filters selected for their AdMob inventory need to opt in to receive Google ads. Publishers can check their “App Settings” tab in the Sites & Apps section of their publisher account to see if they are eligible for Google ads and opt in.

Eligible iPhone and Android application publishers not utilizing ad filters will be opted into receiving Google ads as the feature is rolled out in phases over the next several weeks.

The Best Feature of iOS 4.2 That No One's Talking About

No comments:

The new iOS 4.2 Golden Master Seed was released to developers yesterday and it contains a cool new feature that no one's talking about.

Mike Keller from PCWorld elaborates on the feature he thinks will be very exciting: MIDI.

I'll even admit I may have skimmed past the MIDI API's added in the first 4.2 beta without so much as batting an eye. But now that it's here I think the importance of the new framework is setting in. The iPhone and iPad have already gained some attention as music creation tools (if only in novelty), but I believe serious musicians may now start to recognize iOS as a real studio tool. The large touch screen of the iPad makes it a pretty powerful (and extremely flexible) controller. It will be interesting to see what developers come up with using the iPhone's accelerometer and gyroscope as MIDI input.

Legal Executive at Warner Music Leaves For Apple

No comments:

Elliott Peters, Warner Music Group’s senior VP and head of digital legal affairs is leaving the company next month for a job at Apple, Billboard has learned.

The site obtained an internal memo that indicates Peters will become Corporate Attorney Director for iTunes Europe and Internet Services, based in Luxembourg.

Below is the full memo, sent by Paul Robinson, WMG General Counsel:

---
Dear Colleagues,

I want to share with you the news that Elliott Peters, our SVP and Head of Digital Legal Affairs, will be leaving us next month to take a position with Apple as Corporate Attorney Director for iTunes Europe and Internet Services, based in Luxembourg. Elliott will be managing the European iTunes legal team, including full legal support for iTunes’ various stores and MobileMe in Europe.

In 2000, Elliott left Shearman & Sterling to take on an M&A role in our legal department where he worked on a number of important corporate transactions regarding Columbia House Music and Video Clubs, Word Entertainment and Warner Bros. Publications. In 2003, Elliott became our first digital lawyer and began to build our exceptional Digital Legal Affairs team, now comprised of Jon Glass, Virginia Lockhart and Tucker McCrady. Since that time, Elliott has had a hand in almost every major WMG digital deal.

In May 2009, we had the very good fortune to hire Ron Wilcox as WMG's Executive Counsel, Business Affairs, Strategic and Digital Initiatives. In the last 18 months, Ron has already had a significant impact in leading our digital deal-making. In addition to his current responsibilities, upon Elliott's departure, Ron will oversee our Digital Legal Affairs team.

Please join me in thanking Elliott for the significant contributions he has made to the company during his tenure, and in congratulating Elliott on his new position and Ron on his additional responsibilities.

Paul

ITC Staff Sides With Nokia in Apple Smartphone Trial

No comments:

Nokia likely won't be found liable of infringing on Apple's patents, said staff at the U.S. International Trade Commission, according to Bloomberg.

In January, Apple filed a complaint with the ITC asking them to ban imports of Nokia mobile phones after the company filed the initial complaint in December 2009 asking the ITC to ban imports of the iPhone, iPod, and MacBook products.

"The evidence will not establish a violation" of Apple patent rights, the staff said in a pre-hearing memo released yesterday

The staff said that some aspects of the patents were invalid and others weren’t infringed. ITC Judge Charles Bullock is scheduled to release his findings in February and the staff said that if he does find there was a violation, he should recommend an order to ban imports of specific Nokia phones. The judge isn’t obligated to follow the staff’s position. His ruling is subject to review by the six-member commission, which is scheduled to complete the investigation by June.

AppleCare Protection Plans Are Now Transferable to New Products

No comments:

As of 28 October 2010, customers who want to transfer their AppleCare Protection Plan (APP) coverage to a new product may do so, according to an internal Apple memo obtained by BGR.

The full memo reads:

As of 28 October 2010, customers who want to transfer their AppleCare Protection Plan (APP) coverage to a new product may do so instead of having to cancel the agreement and purchase a new one. This change already applies to AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone as of 23 June 2010. It now applies to all other APP agreements as well:
AppleCare Protection Plan
AppleCare Protection Plan for iPod
AppleCare Protection Plan for iPad

CoBrowser Lets You Share Webpages With Other iDevices

No comments:

CoBrowser saves the webpage you are viewing on your iPhone and using bluetooth sends the stored images and text to a friends device for viewing, with the advantage that the second device requires no internet connection!

You see what they are seeing, they can show you what they are viewing. Browsing is better when enjoyed with a friend.

Important Notes:

i) CoBrowser requires at least one device to have Internet access, and both devices to have bluetooth.

ii) CoBrowser does NOT enable tethering. iOS guidelines mean that when using 2 or more devices to achieve 'shared browsing', a non-internet enabled device (iPhone,iPod touch or iPad) cannot 'borrow' the data plan of a 3G enabled device (tethering).

iii) CoBrowser DOES allow for the mirroring of webpages displayed on an internet-enabled device on a device without 2G/3G connectivity, with any changes on one display being reflected on the other.

What's New In This Version:
● General UI Improvements.

You can purchase CoBrowser from the App Store for $1.99.

Apple Informs Labels That Length of iTunes Song Previews Will Triple

No comments:

Apple has sent a letter to labels informing them that the length of iTunes Song Previews will be increased to 90 seconds.

-----
Dear Label Representative:

We are pleased to let you know that we are preparing to increase the length of music previews from 30 seconds to 90 seconds on the iTunes Store in the United States. We believe that giving potential customers more time to listen to your music will lead to more purchases.

All you have to do is continue making your content available on the iTunes Store, which will confirm you acceptance to the following terms.

You agree that this letter modifies our U.S. Digital Music Download Sales agreement so that "Clips" for songs longer than 2 minutes and 30 seconds may be up to 90 seconds long ("Clips" for shorter songs will stay at 30 seconds); and you agree to license, or pass through to Apple, gratis mechanical rights for 90-second "Clips" embodying the entirety of compositions owned or controlled, in whole or in part, by you or your affiliates. Further, you represent that you have the authority to enter into this letter agreement for 90-second "Clips".

Thank you,

The iTunes Store Team

How to Jailbreak Using a Custom Restore IPSW and RedSn0w (Windows)

No comments:

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone using a custom restore ipsw and RedSn0w for Windows.

**At this time you cannot generate a custom restore ipsw using Windows. You will have to download one or get it from a Mac friend. You may find it easier to use one of the simple jailbreak options like Limera1n or Greenpois0n from these tutorials.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.1 firmware for your device from here.

Extract the redsn0w zip that you just downloaded into the same folder.

Step Two
Launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

Step Three
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button

Step Four
Select the 4.1 firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.

Step Five
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step Six
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data

Step Seven
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like. Choose to put your iPhone in DFU mode.

Step Eight
Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Nine
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Ten
RedSn0w will now exploit your device with limera1n.

Step Eleven
Your device will now be in pwned DFU mode.

Step Twelve
Launch iTunes and select your device from the list on the left. To make iTunes restore to a custom ipsw, hold down Shift and click the Restore button. This will bring up window letting you select the custom ipsw for restore.
