Apple Tries to Block Spotify in the U.S.?

No comments:

Apple is reportedly trying to block the launch of the Spotify streaming music service in the U.S., according to CNET sources.

Spotify has already missed two promised launch dates amidst licensing issues with labels. The music companies are unconvinced of Spotify's business model and are reportedly asking for big upfront royalty fees.

In meetings in Los Angeles recently, Apple executives told their music industry counterparts that they had serious doubts about whether Spotify's business model could ever generate significant revenues or profits, according to two sources with knowledge of the discussions.

But Apple executives worried about the effects of a free music service might have on the rest of the market. They noted that it's tough to sell something that someone else is giving away, the sources said. One industry insider said it is only logical that if Spotify were allowed to launch a free-music service here, at a time when Nielsen recently reported that the growth of digital sales has flattened out, it could eat into the businesses of proven revenue-producers like Apple and Amazon.

Interestingly, another report today from The Post says that Apple is planning its own music subscription service. Perhaps Apple is asking labels to reject Spotify's service in favor of theirs.

Apple in Talks to Launch Music Subscription Service?

No comments:

Apple is reportedly in talks with labels about launching a subscription music service that would let customers have access to unlimited songs for a monthly fee, according to The Post.

Apple iTunes boss Eddy Cue was on the phone with music honchos as recently as a few weeks ago trying to figure out how the partners can move forward.

One source said the service could have tiered pricing ranging from $10 to $15, although there are issues to be ironed out, including how much music would be included in each tier and how long consumers would be able to access that content.

Labels are said to be supportive of the idea. Previously it was rumored that Apple was working on a streaming service for iTunes; however, licensing negotiations may have delayed this offering.

Limera1n, Geohot is back? [update]

1 comment:
Just posted by geohot on limera1n.com

Can this be true, is he back or is he just tormenting us again??

[update by iclarified]
Geohot has suddenly appeared back on the jailbreak scene with a new bootrom exploit he is calling limera1n.

Geohot posted a picture on www.limera1n.com of four iDevices displaying the limera1n logo.

P0sixninja has since confirmed that it is real:

yes, the news about geohot is true, the day after we release ETA he decides he wants a piece of the #pie

and yes it is a different bootrom exploit, he wants us to use it in GP, but there's no way we'll make our ETA if we do

Greenpois0n was scheduled to be released on October 10th, at 10:10:10 GMT.

StealthBravo also tweeted: geohot's return is no joke. He is back and is going to release limera1n unless someone talks him out of it.

Update:
P0sixninja has said that they will use Geohot's exploit if they can implement it in time; however, they will not change the release date.

We are not changing our release date. If we can implement @geohots before 10/10 we will use that, otherwise we're using ours. #roadblocks

.Mac HomePage Viewing Will Be Discontinued on November 8th

No comments:

Apple has sent an email to .Mac customers letting them know that .Mac HomePage viewing will be discontinued on November 8th.

-----
Over a year ago, we retired the .Mac HomePage application for publishing new pages, but allowed previously published pages to remain viewable on the web. On November 8, 2010, we will discontinue online viewing of photos, movies, and files shared using .Mac HomePage.

Please note that your content will not be deleted. Any photos, movies, or files you have published using HomePage will continue to remain on your MobileMe iDisk in the Movies, Pictures, or Public folders. We recommend MobileMe Gallery as a great way to share photos and movies on the web. Please read these instructions on how to move your HomePage photos and movies to MobileMe Gallery.

MobileMe members who have published web pages using iWeb will not be affected by this change. If you have used other software to publish web content to MobileMe or .Mac, or have questions about this change, please read the FAQ page on apples website.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for being a MobileMe member.

How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G Using RedSn0w (Mac) [4.1]

No comments:
These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3G on the 4.1 firmware using RedSn0w for Mac. If you are on a lower firmware version and need to unlock then stay on your current version and follow this jailbreak tutorial.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from Here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.1 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

4.1.0 (3G): iPhone1,2_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw

Extract the redsn0w app from the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step Two
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 4.1 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button

Step Five
Select the 4.1 firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.

Step Six
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step Seven
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data

Step Eight
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.

Verbose boot displays detailed information on boot of your device and is generally only needed by developers and advanced users.

Make sure Cydia is selected. For this tutorial we will also select Custom boot logo and Custom recovery logo.

When you click to select each custom logo option a dialog window will appear asking you to select the image. Locate the image you would like to use then press the Open button.

*Remember the rules for boot logos are: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension below 320x480.

Notice that RedSn0w has already selected to Enable multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, and Enable battery percentage. If you do not need multitasking we would recommend deselecting it as it makes your iPhone 3G run very slow.

Click the Next button to continue

Step Nine
Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Ten
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode Here

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Eleven
Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Twelve
RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step Thirteen
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.
