Twitter Announces Dick Costolo as New CEO

No comments:

Twitter CEO Ev Williams has announced that he is stepping down as CEO of Twitter. Current COO Dick Costolo will be stepping into the roll of CEO and Williams plans to concentrate on product strategy.

Below is the announcement as posted by Williams:

-----
By all accounts Twitter is on a roll. We've redesigned our web site to great user feedback. Our user and usage numbers are growing at a rapid clip all around the world. We’ve launched an early, but successful, monetization effort. And, many top engineers, product designers, sales people and other key folks have joined our quickly growing team.

In fact, there are 300 people working at Twitter today—compared to about 20 when I took the CEO job two years ago. Back then, people were creating about 1.25 million tweets a day—compared to 90 million today. In those same two years, we grew from 3 million registered users to more than 160 million today.

The challenges of growing an organization so quickly are numerous. Growing big is not success, in itself. Success to us means meeting our potential as a profitable company that can retain its culture and user focus while having a positive impact on the world. This is no small task. I frequently reflect on the type of focus that is required from everyone at Twitter to get us there.

This led to a realization as we launched the new Twitter. I am most satisfied while pushing product direction. Building things is my passion, and I’ve never been more excited or optimistic about what we have to build.

This is why I have decided to ask our COO, Dick Costolo, to become Twitter’s CEO. Starting today, I’ll be completely focused on product strategy.

When I insisted on bringing Dick into the COO role a year ago, I got a lot of questions from my board. But I knew Dick would be a strong complement to me, and this has proven to be the case. During his year at Twitter, he has been a critical leader in devising and executing our revenue efforts, while simultaneously and effectively making the trains run on time in the office. Dick can be even more effective at this now because Ali Rowghani, Adam Bain, Mike Abbott, Katie Stanton and Kevin Thau joined our leadership team this year and are having a big impact. Given Dick’s track record as a three-time successful CEO, I’m confident we can make this a smooth transition.

I’m extremely proud of how far Twitter has come in the last two years. And, I couldn’t be more excited about where our amazing team will take it next.

Apple TV is Set Up for Installing Applications

No comments:

Developer Steve Troughton-Smith has discovered that the new Apple TV is set up for installing applications.

"You can definitely add an AppleTV to the provisioning portal, and if you give an app a UIDeviceFamily of 3 it will install on it when signed"

"The application definitely installs on the AppleTV, I used iPhone Explorer to verify"

"So, not only is the AppleTV set up for installing applications (of UIDeviceFamily 3), but the installation actually works"

It seems like only a matter of time until enterprising hackers figure out how to modify Lowtide to launch applications.

Microsoft to Open Larger Retail Store Next to the Apple Store

No comments:

Microsoft is preparing to battle it out with Apple in the Mall of America by opening a larger retail store mere yards away from the Apple Store, according to a TUAW report.

Your Tech Weblog, a part of Minnesota's Pioneer Press, has posted some photos of the massive store-to-be.

It's directly across the hall from Apple Store Mall of America and much larger. As the video above demonstrates, the store will be longer and apparently much deeper than the existing Apple Store. All is fair in love and tech retail, as blogger Julio Ojeda-Zapata points out, so may the best retailer win.

Take a look at the video below...

Skype Hires New Tony Bates as New CEO

No comments:

Skype has hired Tony Bates, a top official at Cisco, as its new chief executive, according to the New York Times.

Tony Bates, who heads the networking giant’s enterprise, commercial and small-business unit — a division with $20 billion in annual revenues and about 12,500 employees — will assume the top job at Skype as its new owners continue to put their own stamp on the fast-growing company after carving it out of eBay one year ago.

Joshua Silverman, a former eBay executive who has run Skype since early 2008, will step aside to make room for Mr. Bates, who joins the company at the end of this month. In 2005, eBay paid $2.6 billion for the startup phone service but never integrated the company into its online auction business.

The new appointment comes after the company filed for an initial public offering in August.

Verizon Wireless plans $30M-$90M customer refunds

No comments:

Verizon Wireless store is seen here in Chicago, Illinois. US telecom titan will pay back up to 90 million …

NEW YORK – Verizon Wireless could pay out up to $90 million in refunds to cell phone customers who were improperly charged for inadvertent Web access or data usage over the past several years.
The Federal Communications Commission had asked Verizon Wireless last year about $1.99-a-megabyte data access fees that appeared on the bills of customers who didn't have data plans but who accidentally initiated data or Web access by pressing a button on their phones.
In a statement on its website Sunday, Verizon Wireless said most of the 15 million customers affected will receive credits of $2 to $6 on their October or November bills. Some will receive larger sums. Customers no longer with the New York-based carrier will get refund checks.
"Verizon Wireless values our customer relationships and we always want to do the right thing for our customers," said Mary Coyne, deputy general counsel for Verizon Wireless. "The majority of the data sessions involved minor data exchanges caused by software built into their phones; others involved accessing the Web, which should not have incurred charges. We have addressed these issues to avoid unintended data charges in the future."

Verizon has said that it stopped charging such fees when a customer started using a data service but then quickly shut it off.
The FCC confirmed Sunday that it has been investigating the charges after complaints from consumers. It said Verizon itself has reportedly put the amount of overcharges at more than $50 million, dating back two years.
"We're gratified to see Verizon agree to finally repay its customers," FCC Enforcement Bureau Chief Michele Ellison said in a statement.
"But questions remain as to why it took Verizon two years to reimburse its customers and why greater disclosure and other corrective actions did not come much, much sooner."
The FCC will continue to look into those issues, including the possibility of additional penalties, Ellison said.
Verizon Wireless, the largest cell phone carrier in the U.S., is a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. and Britain's Vodafone Group PLC.

LG Drops Plans for Android 2.2 Tablet

No comments:

LG Electronics has dropped plans for building a tablet computer based on Android 2.2 Froyo due to reliability issues with the platform.

"We plan to introduce a tablet that runs on the most reliable Android version ... We are in talks with Google to decide on the most suitable version for our tablet and that is not Froyo 2.2," said an LG official.

The company recently fired its CEO for poor performance in the mobile sector and its delay to the tablet market could mean further troubles.

UK Prime Minister is Proud of His iMac Setup

No comments:

In an interview with the Telegraph, UK Prime Minister David Cameron says he is proud of his iMac setup.

"I'm very proud of the fact that I've got an iMac and I've got a speaker remotely linked without a wire which I did myself. I have all the music on the iMac. The cool thing is that I now control my iMac from the iPad, to play out through the speaker but I have to admit I had a little bit of help from someone in IT on that."

"I bought the iMac for Samantha because it’s very important not to use my HoC computer for music. The best thing to do is to put all your music on to the iMac, and then you can sync iPods and iPads with it."

The Prime Minister is likely using AirTunes to send music wirelessly to his speakers. Apple recently introduced AirPlay as a new way to wirelessly stream both audio and video to other devices.

The OS Doesn’t Matter…

No comments:

Jean-Louis Gassée, founder of Be. Inc, argues that the OS doesn't matter since most are a derivative of the same one anyway.

Gassee notes that Apple has actually rebooted their OS twice based on UNIX.

The Apple ][ OS (or lack thereof, purists will say) couldn’t be brought up to modern standards, so the Macintosh had to be built on a fresh foundation. The original Mac OS foundered on its own beachhead and was replaced by OS X. Based on the Mach kernel, OS X is another Unix derivative, co-authored at CMU by Avie Tevanian. Mr Tevanian improved the system during his tenure as head of software at NeXT and was instrumental in convincing Apple that their purchase of NeXT would breathe new life into the company.

He also suggests that the "App Store" has become a "killer OS component".

This new creature called an App Store (or Marketplace, depending upon the…OS). In my non-technical view, the App Store must be considered part of the OS totality, part of its gestalt. Applications have always been in a feedback loop with the OS. A program can only do as much as the OS allows it, so it played tricks to create multi-tasking, to allow smooth audio/video playback. These “tricks” were incorporated into the OS (and the hardware—think GPU), which then bred another generation of apps that wanted more, and so on.

The App Store genre, invented or not in Cupertino, is now part of that loop, a killer OS component, one that deserves a Monday Note of its own.
