BusinessWeek Profiles 'The Man Who Makes Your iPhone'

No comments:

BusinessWeek has published an in depth look at Foxconn founder Terry Gou. The article details how Gou built his empire and how he is dealing with issues currently facing the company.

As he squeezes costs throughout his empire, Gou also takes huge risks on behalf of his major clients. In Chongqing, in central China, Foxconn is spending $1 billion on a factory that will produce 30 million machines a year just for Hewlett-Packard. When Apple's iPhone4 was nearing production, Foxconn and Apple discovered that the metal frame was so specialized that it could be made only by an expensive, low-volume machine usually reserved for prototypes. Apple's designers wouldn't budge on their specs, so Gou ordered more than 1,000 of the $20,000 machines from Tokyo-based Fanuc. Most companies have just one. "Terry is a strong leader with a passion for excellence," says Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer. "He's a trusted partner and we are fortunate to work with him." The Longhua plant now produces 137,000 iPhones a day, or about 90 a minute.

If you are interested in the industry, this is a recommended read.

Apple to Manufacture an AWS-Compliant iPhone?

No comments:

Apple is in the process of manufacturing an AWS-compliant iPhone, according to the executive Vice-President of Vidéotron.

Canada's Quebecor launched the new mobile service today. Similar to T-Mobile it uses AWS spectrum to offer 3G service.

Engadget reports that during the launch Q&A, Vidéotron's VP noted that Apple was building an AWS-compliant iPhone and that we should "expect an announcement in the coming months" regarding Vidéotron's launch of the device.

This corroborates an earlier report which said that talks between Apple and T-Mobile are at an advanced stage with an 80 percent likelihood that the T-Mobile will get the device.

Apple May Release a FaceTime Enabled iPad This Year

No comments:

Apple may break away from its typical one year product cycle and release a new iPad with a FaceTime camera before the holidays, according to an AppleInsider report.

The site has learned from a source that an iPad with a built-in video camera has already progressed to the advanced testing stages.

Although Apple's historical product cycles would beg to differ, that person familiar with the company's plans claims that as of last month, there was an ambitious push inside Apple to verify the refresh for a possible launch ahead of this year's holiday shopping season.

Many were surprised when Apple released the iPad that it did not feature a camera; especially considering the frame had a spot for one. Perhaps Apple was unable to finish its FaceTime technology in time for the initial launch.

I don't need FaceTime on my iPad just more ram, 4.2 (jailbroken), and a retina display!!!

Apple Reiterates September 30th Deadline for Free iPhone 4 Case

No comments:

Apple has reiterated that its free case program for the iPhone 4 will be ending on September 30th, according to a note posted to their site.

We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought. A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free. For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. Users experiencing antenna issues should call AppleCare to request a free Bumper case.
