Motorola Takes Another Jab at the iPhone

No comments:

Motorola has taken out yet another full page ad in the New York Times, this time making fun of the iPhone's lack of Flash.

The ad reads: "Flash Websites? There's a phone for that. Introducing the new Droid 2 by Motorola."

This is obviously a play on the "There's an App for that" slogan used by Apple.

Previous ads by Motorola mocked the iPhone 4 signal problems and free case program.

Blancspot Modern Way to Experience the News

No comments:

The Apple iPhone is defined by its user experience. "Sleek", "Sophisticated" and "Stylish" are only some of the words that come to mind when faced with a shiny new iPhone or iPad. Traditionally, national and global news coverage does not have the same sort of adjectives associated with them. Things like "depressing", "flat" or "biased" are often found more closely tied to how the public views mass news media. Pulling the two together is Blancspot, a revolutionary new way to experience and interact with the news on the iPhone that combines photojournalists elements and solid news reporting with social media and cause activation tools.

The idea has intrigued Apple, which is now prominently featuring Blancspot in the iTunes App Store for the second week running. "We were thrilled at the response we got to Blancspot from Apple", said Camille LeBlanc, CEO of Blancspot Media. "The idea of Blancspot fits hand in hand with the ideology of Apple, where not only is function paramount, but the entire experience of the user. Blancspot is not just news you read - its news you experience."

Being on Apple's good side has its advantages. In the first 24 hours of its release, Blancspot shot to the top five of the best selling news applications, where it stayed for a week. In that time, its sales also landed it the number three position in the coveted top grossing news apps.

The goal of Blancspot is to give consumers a full 360 view of news, allowing them to form their own judgments and become a part of it, either through discussion or active engagement. To do this, Blancspot provides:

* Stunning images from top photojournalists around the world presented in cinematic sequences set to an ever evolving soundtrack.
* An unbiased summary of complex topics with links to relevant external sources on both sides of an story
* Engagement with up to the minute social conversation through a targeted look into Twitter
* The ability to engage with or create causes related to the news

Blancspot is currently available for the iPhone and iPod touch, and to celebrate its successful launch and featuring by Apple has reduced the price to $1.99 for a limited time.

Bill Management App Adds Income Tracking

No comments:

LittleFin Software has announced the release of Chronicle 3.4, an update to their best-selling home finance and bill paying application for Mac OS X. The app provides an easy, graphical means to enter and track finances. Features include: automatic bill paying reminders; long-term debt tracking; database of payments and receipts; graphs and reports which analyze trends and averages; and a sortable list of upcoming bills which can be paid on-line from within the app.

New in this version is the ability to track income and compare it to bill spending. The user can enter their monthly income in Chronicle, and Chronicle automatically calculates how much income remains based on bills paid. Chronicle also estimates how much money will likely be spent on bills for the rest of the month based on past history.

Not surprisingly, much of the unpleasantness of paying household bills is the confusion, disorder, and poor record keeping that makes the process stressful. Chronicle is designed to remove all the stumbling blocks, and even add style and automation to what was formerly considered a chore. The application setup process begins by entering all recurring and non-recurring bills. The Create a New Bill Window opens and allows the user to populate the following fields: Name (of bill); Next Due Date, Repeats (monthly, weekly, etc.), Bill Payment Information (on-line, phone, mail, automatic), Amount (optional), Notes, Reminders (set notification - payment interval), and Icon (optional collection of 40 different types of bills).

With all bills entered in this way, users can now employ the application. They now have at their disposable an easy-to-use overview of their household finances. Bills can be sorted, viewed graphically, etc. Any question that arises can be answered instantly from the Overview window, which displays both detailed and summary information.

Chronicle keeps track of the user's bills, and reminds them when each one is due using iCal - even when neither program is running. With the high cost of late payment fees, help from this feature just once will pay for the app. Paying off debt can be a daunting task, but Chronicle can help the user set goals, and then track progress, which bolsters motivation. The application remembers the user's payment history for each bill, and even organizes scanned or downloaded receipts by date, so they can quickly find and view them for reference or proof of payment.

Feature Highlights:
* Easy to learn and use application with powerful features
* Extensive use of graphics, icons, fields, and color to help organize data
* Provides automatic reminders through iCal whenever bills are due
* Organizes bills and receipts
* Provides reports on trends and averages
* Free updates for life
* Provides both overview and detailed view of any aspect of finances

In addition, Chronicle analyzes payments by month and year and displays the information graphically. It also averages payments so it is easier to budget for bills that fluctuate, like utilities or credit cards. Finally, the sortable overview screen displays at a glance when each bill is due. Colorful icons indicate when a bill is overdue, due soon, or due in the future. With a couple clicks, the user can log payments or make payments online.

Reminders are automatically added to iCal, so they appear on the user's iPhone automatically when synced. With MobileMe, bill reminders are pushed to the user's iPhone, or iPod touch instantly. Chronicle features three different professionally designed graphical themes. The recipient of a host of awards, including Apple Staff Pick, Chronicle has earned a loyal customer base with a well-designed product and "Free Upgrades for Life."

Pricing and Availability:
Chronicle 3.4 for Mac OS X is $20.95 (USD or equivalent in other currencies), and available now from LittleFin Software. Review copies are available upon request.

Interactive Virtual Sparkler Creation Tool

No comments:

iPhone artist deeje has released iSparkler 1.0, his interactive virtual sparkler creation tool for iPhone 4. The app enables the user to create, name, and save thousands of unique digital sparklers which respond to movement of the iPhone. Stop motion photos, capturing the multi-colored particles and designs emitted by the streaking virtual sparkler, can be saved and shared. Sparklers vary infinitely with random values assigned to particle color, shape, and behavior. Five preset sparklers, hand-picked by deeje, are included. The sparkler effect, particularly in dark surroundings, is highly realistic by virtue of the iPhone 4's advanced hardware features.

The iPhone 4 includes a state-of-the-art MEMS gyroscope; the microelectromechanical system gyro enables iSparkler to respond not only to y-axis rotation (tilt up-down), but z-axis rotation (turn left-right) as well. The ability to process input from all axes of rotation completes the illusion of a real sparkler, as it streaks, twirls, dives, and reverses direction. iSparkler also makes use of Retina display to produce life-like pyrotechnics that are both dazzling and hypnotic.

Feature Highlights:
* Motion - gently wave the iPhone 4 around to create streaks of light particles
* Randomize - explore a near infinite variety of sparkler colors, shapes, and behaviors
* Favorites - save sparklers and give them names to play with them again
* Snapshots - take a time series of snapshots of favorite sparklers in motion
* Share - post and save snapshots to Facebook and the photo library
* Achievements - track various stats and goals

A mesmerizing toy ready to play with at any time, iSparkler will entice many iPhone 4 owners, irrespective of age or gender. When, tapping the random generator button, the user creates a particularly appealing sparkler, they can give it a name and save it permanently in the app's library for future use. The Profile mode keeps track of all the statistics: number of random sparklers generated, number of sparklers saved, total waving distance, total waving time, and number of snapshots taken. Planned for future releases of the app are additional input methods, and music integration.

"A kid at night with a sparkler is an interactive fireworks display, entertaining everyone," enthused aspiring iPhone artist deeje. "iSparkler 1.0 will let you re-live those summer nights using your iPhone 4."

Pricing and Availability:
iSparkler 1.0 is regularly priced at $1.99 (USD), but is available now during this Introductory Sale at $0.99. Review copies are available upon request.

ABC Letters Tracing 1.3 Released

No comments:

Redbot Software has announced the release and immediate availability of ABC Letters Tracing 1.3.0, an update to their educational app for iPhone and iPod touch. ABC Letters Tracing serves to help parents teach their children the alphabet, based on popular letter writing and tracing activity books used in schools. The child uses their finger to trace each letter on the screen of the device. As each letter appears the child hears the name of the letter along with the corresponding phonic pronunciation. An associated animal also appears above each letter.

As the child outlines each letter, following dotted guide arrows, they are encouraged with feedback. The app will auto correct, and ask the child to try again if they make a mistake. There are sparkly stars that appear as they draw on the screen with their finger, which adds an additional layer of fun for the child. The child can also tap on the animal, and the name will be read to them.

There are options for random or alphabetical order. There is an option for "easy mode" which disables the auto-correct, for younger children, that may have more trouble tracing the letters accurately. Parents can use this app to keep their children entertained while traveling in the car, at the store, in a waiting room, etc. And instead of playing sometimes questionable games, the child can have fun and learn with Artie Anteater and his freinds.

Additional key features:
* Guided arrow for each letter, with auto-correct
* Points are awarded throughout the app for completing the letters
* The child will hear encouragement throughout app and at the end with their high score

New with update 1.3.0:
* Improved feedback options. When a child makes a mistake, they are encouraged to "try again" or "you can do it" or "almost there"
* High resolution images replace all characters and artwork throughout the app. (Optimized for iPhone 4 display)
* Many performance improvements and optimizations

Pricing and Availability:
ABC Letters Tracing 1.3.0 is $1.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Kids & Educational Game categories.
