iPhone 3G Speed Test: iOS 4 versus iOS 4.1

No comments:

Check out this video comparison showing the performance of the iPhone 3G on iOS 4 versus iOS 4.1.

Lifehacker posted the following results:
● Messages: iOS 4.1 Wins (By a Little)
● Maps: iOS 4.1 Wins (By a Lot)
● Photos: iOS 4.1 Wins (Just Barely)
● Safari: iOS 4.1 Wins (Just Barely)

While the speed advantages ranged from marginal to significant, iOS 4.1 clearly outperformed iOS 4.0. It's still significantly slower performance than you'll get from a 3GS or iPhone 4, and we're still not sure it's a big enough improvement that 3G owners will want to ditch iOS 3. The most obvious difference was UI responsiveness. The UI didn't get stuck nearly as much on an interface element or when trying to enter text. If you are set on using iOS 4, the upgrade is worthwhile for that alone.

Video will be up shortly..

Apple Adds Showtimes to iTunes Movie Trailers Site

No comments:

Apple has added a new feature to their iTunes Movie Trailers site which lets you find showtimes and purchase movie tickets.

Clicking the Find Showtimes button from a movie's trailer page takes you to a page which automatically locates the closest theaters, displays a timeline of upcoming shows, and gives you the option to "Get Tickets".

Nearby theaters are displayed on a map. Clicking one of the pins will reveal the theatre's address and directions to it.

Ticket sales are forwarded to Fandango for processing.

It's likely that HTML5 is required so make sure you have a compatible browser when trying to access the site.

Plex Announces Deal to Bring Its Media Center to LG TVs

No comments:

Plex, a popular media center for Mac and recently iOS, has announced that LG will be integrating their platform into its 2011 Netcast HDTVs and Blu-ray devices, making media and applications accessible through a range of products.

"After considering many alternative solutions, LG Electronics chose to utilize Plex’s media server platform technology as a part of its next generation NetCast enabled home entertainment products because of the breadth of available applications and content and the ease of developing new services," said Hojun Nam, Director of LCD TV R&D at LG Electronics. "Plex’s capabilities offer our customers’ additional methods of displaying their content on LG’s next generation TVs and that is exciting to us."

Compatibility with mainstream mobile devices, such as iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone products, and soon to be announced Android based products including mobile phones and tablets, ensures that the Plex solution is the industry’s first truly integrated three-screen media platform, allowing a seamless experience across devices and media sources. Plex’s mobile compatibility also allows users access to their content from anywhere, making content consumption and management seamless across all device types – whenever and wherever users prefer.

“We’ve been working hard to build this killer platform, and we have an amazing community who has enabled access to over one hundred online content sources to date” noted Elan Feingold, CTO and co-founder, Plex. “It’s exciting that this content will now be available in a seamless manner on LG’s 2011 NetCast enabled TVs and Blu-ray players.”

Third-party developers and owners of content have the ability to develop Plex plug-ins, which will then be available to all Plex users across all devices. Currently, there are nearly 200 plug-ins available through Plex’s service including iTunes, Netflix, CNN, Revision3, YouTube, and many others.

Plex for OS X is downloadable for free, with a Windows version to be available later this year.

Apple Wants to Ramp-up iPad Production to 3 Million/Month

No comments:

Apple is currently building 2 million iPads/month and wants to increase this to 3 million/month for C4Q10, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty.

Apple's recent increase to 2 million iPads made per month was likely the reason for quicker ship times of the device. However, it seems like Apple is anticipating even higher demand.

Huberty says, “Apple recently indicated to its suppliers a desire to move to 3 million per month in C4Q10. This implies a run rate of 36 million in CY11, close to the current 40 million supply chain forecast.”

Apple iOS is Now the Third Most Popular Platform

No comments:

Apple's iOS mobile operating is now the third most popular platform on the Internet, according to data from Net Applications.

Computer World relays information from the company that found iOS to be six times larger than Android and account for 1.1% of all hardware on the Internet last month.

For the month of August, Linux fell to a 0.85% share, the third month in a row that the open-source operating system lost ground. Windows and Apple's Mac OS were the No. 1 and No. 2 operating systems on the Web, with 91.3% and 5%, respectively.

"It's something to take note of when a mobile operating system passes something that's been around forever," said Vince Vizzaccaro, a Net Applications vice president, talking about iOS overtaking Linux. "Mobile's growth curve is strong, and mobile is becoming quite a phenomenon on the Internet."

Steve Jobs Responds to Criticism of New iTunes Icon

No comments:

Steve Jobs has responded a customer who emailed to complain about how much the new iTunes logo sucked, according to Wired.

Joshua Kopac, who oversees design work for advertising firm ValuLeads, sent Jobs this email.

-----
Steve,

Enjoyed the presentation today. But … this new iTunes logo really sucks. You’re taking 10+ years of instant product recognition and replacing it with an unknown. Let’s both cross our fingers on this….
-----

We disagree.

Sent from my iPhone

-----

While brand recognition might be an issue with the new iTunes logo, the bigger problem isn't that Apple removed the CD but that the icon is amateurish in design. It doesn't compare to other Apple logos like QuickTime, Safari, Finder etc.

Customers are also complaining about the new iTunes design which is now almost completely gray with cartoonish elements such as the check marks. Apple may be trying to highlight the colorful elements of the iTunes Store with this new design; however, most users spend more time managing their iTunes Library then in the Store.

These changes have already led to such packages as iTunes 109 which will revert the design elements of iTunes 10 back to the colorful ones of iTunes 9.

You CAN Make Your Own Ringtones in iTunes 10

No comments:

While many sites are reporting that you cannot create custom ringtones in iTunes 10 this is still in fact possible.

As we have published in our Windows and Mac ringtone tutorials, the general way to create a custom ringtone in iTunes was to modify the info of a track to start and stop at the desired point, create an AAC version of the song, drag this file to the desktop, rename it from .m4a to .m4r and add it back to iTunes.

Unfortunately, it initially seems that Apple is no longer letting you do this as the .m4r file will not add back to your iTunes library. Turns out that you need to add the file back from within your iTunes Music folder.

There are two easy ways of doing this. First you can drag the .m4r file from the desktop to your iTunes Music/Ringtones folder then double click it. Another way of doing this is once you have created the AAC version, right click it and select Show in Finder. Then delete the file in iTunes choosing to remove it from the library but Keep File. Rename the .m4a file you located in Finder to .m4r, then double click it to add it as a ringtone.

We will be updating our tutorials shortly.

Deutsche Telekon AG to Lose iPhone Exclusivity in Germany?

No comments:

Deutsche Telekom AG may lose iPhone exclusivity in Germany by October, according to the WSJ.

Vodafone Group PLC and Telefónica SA's O2 will sell the iPhone in addition to Deutsche Telekom, the people said Thursday. One said that deals haven't been finalized, but added that negotiations are in an advanced stage. Deutsche Telekom's exclusive rights to sell the device haven't been extended and could end as early as October, posing a threat to growth in the company's home market.

Deutsche Telekom has had exclusive rights to the iPhone since November 2007. The company has sold over 1.9 million iPhones in Germany and is the last major European market in which Apple has such a deal.

Google to Launch Music Download Store?

No comments:

Google is in talks with music labels and is planning a download store and digital song locker, according to Reuters.

Their sources say Google Vice President of Engineering Andy Rubin has been in conversation with labels about what this Google music service would look like. Rubin reportedly wants the service up and running by Christmas.

While no deals have been signed yet, the labels are excited about another large scale competitor in the industry. Currently, Apple accounts for 70% of all digital music sales in the states.

"Finally here's an entity with the reach, resources and wherewithal to take on iTunes as a formidable competitor by tying it into search and Android mobile platform," said a label executive who asked not to be identified. "What you'll have is a very powerful player in the market that's good for the music business."
