Will Verizon's planned '4G' network be better than Sprint's?

No comments:

If the rumors we're hearing are true, there could be a super iPhone in your pocket as early as January of next year. Just yesterday, we heard believable reports of the iPhone becoming available on Verizon in January. Now, the rumor mill has Verizon launching a superfast LTE wireless network this November 15.

Verizon announced its intention to build a LTE (Long Term Evolution) network last year, so there is some factual basis to this rumor. While LTE is not exactly 4G — it's known as "3.9G" because it doesn't quite comply with 4G requirements — this can be accurately called wireless broadband, and it's on its way to Verizon.

Meanwhile, AT&T also announced its plans to develop an LTE network in February of this year, with a proposed launch in 2011. The race is on. Now let's see which cellphone giant applies those windfall profits to a viable next-generation wireless network the fastest. This is going to be good.

Image of the Day: How to fix the iPhone 4 'holding' problem

No comments:

If you're following the iPhone 4, you've probably heard about its issues with left-handed calling. Since the antenna is built into the edge of the phone, it's a seemingly tough problem to tackle. But as one Photoshopper shows, the solution is actually pretty simple.

Art Lebedev keyboard has a customizable display for every key

No comments:

Art Lebedev's next expensive and impressive keyboard, the Optimus Popularis, improves on previous keyboards before it while adding something nifty and new: a status bar for your computer at the top of the 'board. You'll get weather updates, information about your PC, and more. Oh, and every key is a display, too.

The status bar is a nice, always-on panel that you can customize to give you everything from the interesting, such as stock reports, to the useful, like how many email messages you've got waiting for you. The real trick, though, is in the buttons, which now have improved screens that take up almost the entire face of each key.

This allows the keyboard to do more with less. For instance, you could change what language your keyboard displays, or even have a numpad appear at the press of a button, rather than having to have extra physical keys. It gives the keyboard an elegant air, and is probably the limit of what can be done without just making this thing virtual.

The big drawback? You guessed it. It's set to launch for "under $1,000," though how far under is anyone's guess. Look for pre-orders to start later this year.

Microsoft's new Surface is a touchscreen you don't have to touch

No comments:

Well, this sure looks neat. Microsoft's Applied Sciences Group has come up with a new interface system for computers that uses a camera positioned behind a transparent OLED screen to create a touchscreen you don't have to touch.

Yep, because the screen can essentially see you, you're able to use it like a normal touchscreen or step back, wave your hands around, and use gesture-based controls like Microsoft showed off with Kinect.

What's the practical use of this tech? Heck if I know, but you'd better believe the gang at Microsoft is working hard of figuring that out as we speak.

2007 dock works better with iPhone 4 than the $29 new one

No comments:

We bristled at the fact that the iPhone 4 didn't fit in its predecessor's dock. But thanks to an astute commenter, we found out the first iPhone's dock, included free with the phone back in 2007, works beautifully with the iPhone 4. In fact, it works even better than the new one that's custom made for it.

Our $29 custom dock made by Apple, pretty much the most expensive piece of plastic we've ever bought, arrived via FedEx today. Placing our iPhone 4 into it, we noticed it's a really tight fit — they're perfectly made for each other. The ironic thing is, we prefer the way the iPhone 4 fits in the old iPhone 1's dock (it doesn't fit in the iPhone 3G or 3GS's dock). It's not so unnecessarily tight, and that makes it incredibly easy to remove with one hand, a usability improvement that makes a big difference.

You laugh, but one-handed dock removal is a great convenience when you're half asleep, reaching over for the iPhone to check your email before you get up. You only need to use one hand, and you don't have to wedge a finger against the dock and uncomfortably extract the iPhone from its nest. Best of all, the iPhone 4 charges and syncs just as well with the old dock.

If you've been using iPhones since Day One, it's time to dig up that old dock. If you're a longtime iPhone user who's already sprung for the $29 iPhone 4 dock, well, now you have two — one for your office and one for your nightstand. By the way, if you want to try using the iPad dock for your iPhone 4, that's not going to work, either. For future reference, Apple, why not just include a dock in the box like you did at first?

Steve Jobs Says Over-the-Air HD Uploads Are Coming

No comments:

Steve Jobs says over-the-air HD uploads will be coming to iPhone 4 users in the future, according to an email provided to MacDailyNews.

-----
I'm a HUGE fan of your products... MBP, Ipad 64gb WIFI, 2 iphone 3g's and now 2 iphone 4's... but I have a complaint... What's the point of building in HD video capabilities when the compression upon uploading directly to youtube makes the video's useless and not viewable? They're not even remotely viewable!! I was so excited about this feature on the Iphone 4, but sadly to say, this is a serious disappointment. In today's world, HD video is pointless if I can't upload it "as is" directly to the net.

Please fix this issue.

Thanks,

Chris

You can upload them via a Mac or PC today. Over the air in the future.

Starbucks Announces Free WiFi in Canada As Well

No comments:

Starbucks will turn on free Wi-Fi with one click on July 1 at U.S. and Canadian company-operated stores.

Customers with Wi-Fi-enabled laptops, tablets and mobile phones will have unlimited Internet access to surf the Web, connect with social networks, search for jobs or work at their neighborhood Starbucks. Most recently, the free Wi-Fi benefit was limited to two hours a day and only available to members of the My Starbucks Rewards program. The new, unlimited Wi-Fi offering features a one-click entry point, so a username or password will not be required.

“Our customers were asking for a simplified Wi-Fi offering, and free Wi-Fi has been a top request on MyStarbucksIdea.com. We’re excited to turn this feedback into action and believe our customers will be delighted with the enhanced experience they’ll find in Starbucks stores,” said Howard Schultz, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Starbucks.

Starbucks will continue to work with AT&T in the U.S. as its Wi-Fi provider, a relationship that’s been in place since 2008. Close to 6800 Starbucks locations are part of AT&T’s U.S. Wi-Fi network, the nation’s largest. In Canada, more than 750 company-operated stores will now have free Wi-Fi. Bell is the Wi-Fi provider in Canada and has worked with Starbucks since 2005.

STEP AWAY FROM THE PHONE! 3.0

No comments:

LOLers Apps has released Anti Theft Alarm: STEP AWAY FROM THE PHONE! 3.0 for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users.

Anti Theft Alarm: STEP AWAY FROM THE PHONE! 3.0 brings peace of mind to iDevice users who worry about device theft. When a user arms the app, they have 5 seconds to put the device down before they hear a lifelike car alarm activation "chirp." Once it's armed, nobody can touch the Anti Theft Alarm protected device without attracting more attention than any thief wants.

The alarm sound is composed of 7 separate actual car alarm sirens and warnings which are blended together into one ear shattering alert. The device also vibrates, and a Viper car alarm-like voice commands the intruder to "Please step away from the phone!" Realistic strobing, police style lights serve as a visual aid, just in case the crook didn't get the message the first time.

This app was inspired by an actual car alarm and, like the real thing, it serves a dual purpose. First, it alerts the user to any attempted theft, and second, it lets the would-be phone snatcher know that they just messed with the wrong device!

Anti Theft Alarm: STEP AWAY FROM THE PHONE! 3.0 features include:
* Audio Track of 7 different alarm/siren sounds all meshed into one loud and obnoxious alarm
* Viper-like car alarm system voice is super cool
* Life-like car alarm activated and deactivated buttons and beeps! Really impress your friends
* 5 second arming delay to place or "setup" your phone in the perfect place
* Screen stays dark to mimic sleeping mode, so you can really catch the bad guys
* Alarm triggers and device vibrates repeatedly when moved, to startle thieves even more
* High-quality police light animation
* Advertisement free

Pricing and Availability:
Anti Theft Alarm: STEP AWAY FROM THE PHONE! 3.0 is only $0.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Utilities category. Promo codes are available for qualified reviewers. Please specify the website or blog you represent when making your request.

ITGO 1.4 Released

No comments:

ITGO - Interval Trainer GO by Appnoose for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad has been upgraded to version 1.4 which features several free enhancements and also introduces several key new features available as an in app purchase.

Appnoose states that the original ITGO set a new standard for Interval Training or HIIT on the iPhone and iPod touch with a host of new features and design aesthetics never previously seen on any mobile multifunction device. Features such as dual music playlists for fast and slow intervals in addition to voice, beep or custom prompts, double vibration on the iPhone and gorgeous concentric dial timers that include separate interval timers as well as a session timer brought high praise for ITGO 1.0. Version 1.4 software extends that functionality by adding greater flexibility to setting parameters, adding more audio stimuli and some cosmetic changes.

"Losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle takes effort but ITGO makes Interval Training, one of the most effective forms of exercise, fun and stimulating", states Appnoose founder OD Hunte. "We've added some key new features requested by customers with this update and we've got some even more exciting ones planned"

All existing customers can upgrade to V1.4 and will get the free additional benefits and fixes as listed below but only the paid upgrades, delivered as an in-app purchase, will get the new additional premium features available in ITGO V1.4

Free V1.4 Upgrade Benefits:

1. Sleep Mode
ITGO now stays awake and disables sleep mode correctly.

2. Cosmetic Led Updates
LEDs have been upgraded with slicker sharper LED graphics and sliders have also been updated to a cleaner version.

3. More Stable Operation - ITGO's operation is more robust

4. Fixed Timer Error - A timer error which allowed setting of the session length to less than the current time has been fixed.

Premium Upgrade Benefits
Ratio - ITGO now has an adjustable Ratio from 1:1-20. This higher ratio is accessed by double tapping the ratio button and selecting "Value" to numerically enter the ratio value from 3 to 20. ITGO then gives you a choice of either 1:1, half the maximum value and the maximum value. For example a maximum ratio value of 10 would show as 1:1, 1:5, 1:10. Again, double tapping the ratio and selecting Flip will allow you to flip the slow and fast interval ratios.

2. Interval Length
ITGO now features more flexible intervals from 4 seconds to 90 seconds.

3. Count In Beeps
ITGO now counts in four multi-beeps before interval changes in all modes. This will alert you to the fact the interval is about to change and may come in handy if you are listening to podcasts for example where the audio may not be set to change between intervals. Engage the Beep feature by selecting Beeps in the Sounds page.

4. End Of Workout Session Prompt
ITGO no longer stops to silence, it now has an end of workout session audio prompt

ITGO will run on all OS 3 and higher devices. When running ITGO in the background on iOS 4 devices, ITGO will pause your workout and resume right where you left off when you return to it.

Pricing and Availability:
ITGO - Interval Trainer GO 1.4 is $2.99 (USD) and is available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Healthcare & Fitness category. ITGO premium in-app purchase is $1.00 (USD). Review copies are available upon request.
