Tech Company Resolutions for 2011

No comments:

The Joy of Tech has made some humorous New Year's Resolutions for today's top tech companies.

Apple:
"I resolve to savor every moment of watching Facebook and Google try to strangle each other. And also to keep our iPhone 5 prototype out of the greasy hands of slime-buckets."

AT&T:
"We're resolved to beg and grovel, even more, at the feet of Steve Jobs, in order to keep our iPhone exclusivity! Please Steve, no iPhone on Verizon! Please!"

Google:
"I resolve to continue to follow my Three Laws of Android Robotics...
#1. Copy Apple.
#2. Do not grievously harm Apple, in order to preserve our idea generator
#3. Goto #1"

Apple to Announce Verizon iPhone by Valentine's Day?

No comments:

Apple may announce a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 that works on Verizon by Valentine's Day, according to BusinessWeek.

Apple's introduction of an iPhone for use on Verizon's network will come sometime after the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January, according to a person familiar with Apple's plans who is not authorized to discuss them publicly.

The article surmises that the blow to AT&T may not be as bad as suggested, mainly because most customers are either locked into a contract or will not want to go through the hassle of switching carriers.

Still, even if AT&T loses more than twice as many customers as Hodulik projects, the carrier will not suffer a fatal blow. If 6 million of its customers defect, the $6 billion in lost annual revenue would amount to about 10 percent of AT&T's wireless sales in 2011, according to UBS projections. The $6 billion would be 4.8 percent of its total projected sales of $126 billion in 2011.

Earlier this month, AT&T started moving up iPhone 4 eligibility dates for some customers in what was seen as an effort to lock down as many contracts as possible before Verizon gets the device.

Man Punches Teen for Refusing to Turn Off iPhone on Flight

No comments:

Russell Miller, a 68-year-old Treasure Valley man, punched a 15-year-old teenager after he refused to turn off his iPhone.

Witnesses say the teen was on his iPhone playing games and listening to music. When the intercom announced that all electronics be turned off, the teen ignored the request. As a result, Russell Miller got angry and punched the 15 year old. The pilots radioed air traffic control and cops were sent to the gate to arrest Russell Miller.

He punched him so hard there was a mark on the teen's arm," Lipple said. "That gave us probable cause to believe the reports from the other passengers."

Miller was charged with one count of misdemeanor battery and booked into the Ada County jail.

Ok, first off there is an airplane mode on idevices for a reason! Second no one has the right to attack anyone on a plane weather you are provoked or not, let alone a miner. Isn't there supposed to be a cop or USMarshall on every plane or did they stop doing that? Flight attendants need to be trained to know which electronics have airplane mode and which don't, to avoid these kinds of things happening in the future.

Leaked iPad 2 Case Mold Drawings Show New Port?

No comments:

9to5Mac has obtained leaked iPad 2 case moldings which show tapered edges, a slightly contoured back, a back camera, and a brand new port.

Some new information we have discovered through these drawings is a brand new port opening on the left side of the device. We’re not sure what this opening is for but it is there on these latest iPad 2 design schematics. On the drawings there appears to be an SD card going into the port but that could just be a piece of the case mold machine. The latest rumors point to either a mini USB or a full USB port being present on the iPad 2 so it very well could be one or a combination of the three ports.

The site has also heard that the thickness of the iPad 2 is 8.5mm. The current iPad is 13.4mm at the center.

*thanks iclarified*

Do we have to remind you about the iPod touch 3rd gen cases and rumors that it would have the camera?? These are mainly guesses by manufactures of how these idevices will look, and anyone with a cad program can make this drawing it's not hard..

Apple Expects iPad 2 to Outsell Market Estimates

No comments:

Touch panel shipment estimates reveal that Apple is planning to sell far more iPad 2s than the market expects.

DigiTimes reports:

LG Display is estimated to land orders for 35 million iPad panels in 2011, and Samsung and Chimei Innolux (CMI), who is scheduled to join Apple's iPad supply chain in the first quarter of 2011, will each receive orders for 15 million units.

Based on these estimates, iPad panel shipments (including first and second generation models) will reach 65 million units in 2011, which is significantly higher than market estimates of 45-48 million units for the year.

The latest iPad 2 rumors have the device sporting a sleeker shape, a camera, and a wide-range speaker.

Angry Birds Creator Predicts iOS Will Be Number One For a Long Time

No comments:

Peter Verterbacka, known as the 'Mighty Eagle' at Rovio Mobile, offers his thoughts on developing for different platforms during an interview with technmarketing.

When asked how he viewed the various mobile OSs in regard to the future of mobile technology, this is his reply:

"Apple will be the number one platform for a long time from a developer perspective, they have gotten so many things right. And they know what they are doing and they call the shots. Android is growing, but it's also growing complexity at the same time. Device fragmentation not the issue, but rather the fragmentation of the ecosystem. So many different shops, so many different models. The carriers messing with the experience again. Open but not really open, a very Google centric ecosystem. And paid content just doesn’t work on Android.

Besides Apple and Google, it will be interesting to see how long it will take for Nokia to get their act together. MeeGo is clearly the future there, remains to be seen how big and how soon. HP-Palm webOS is a really cool OS and has been a pleasure developing for that one, but the volume is irrelevant for the time being. Everything else is more or less "interesting" right now, ie no real business to be had, at least not yet."

CNN Names Antenna Gate the Biggest Tech Fail of 2010

No comments:

CNN has named Antenna Gate the biggest tech fail of 2010. Ping also makes the list at number ten.

1. iPhone 4 'Antennagate'
First Apple said the problem didn't exist. Then they said it was a software issue. Then they kind-of admitted it existed and gave away free cases to help. Then, they said it doesn't really exist anymore and stopped giving away the bumpers.

Months later, the problem is all but forgotten and the phones show no sign of dipping in popularity. So "fail," in this case, is a pretty relative term.

10. iTunes Ping
There's a whole social network set up in Apple's iTunes store now. Didn't know that? Well, there you go.

Not all musical artists are on there. And it doesn't integrate with Facebook. (Although Ping and Twitter just linked up). And, a lot of the time, it simply pushes you to buy music. Needless to say, Ping hasn't really caught on.

Hit this link to view the entire list...

Apple Sued Twice Over User Tracking

No comments:

Apple is facing two lawsuits over the collection and sharing of user data with outside companies, according to an iLounge report.

Both suits—Lalo v. Apple and Freeman v. Apple—were filed in the Northern District of California; the former was first reported by Bloomberg while the latter was spotted by Wired. Both suits appear to be heavily based on research compiled and published by the Wall Street Journal, which showed that some apps send age, gender, location, and phone identifier information to ad networks without notifying the user.

The suit, filed on behalf of Jonathan Lalo, complains that "Some apps are also selling additional information to ad networks, including users' location, age, gender, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation and political views."

The Freeman suit holds Apple responsible for approving the applications that track user data. "Defendant Apple, by exercising significant control over App developers and sharing profits with them, has created a 'community of interest' with the other Defendants to render them joint venturers, who are responsible for each other’s torts. Defendant Apple has also aided and abetted the remaining Defendants in the commission of their legal wrongs against Plaintiffs and the proposed class."

Lalo identifies offending applications such as Pandora, Paper Toss, the Weather Channel and Dictionary.com, naming them as defendants along with Apple. Freeman names Toss It, Text4Plus, The Weather Channel, Talking Tom Cat, and Pimple Popper Lite in addition to Apple.

Apple to Release Wi-Fi, UMTS, and CDMA Versions of iPad 2?

No comments:

Apple will reportedly release three versions of the iPad 2, supporting either or a combination of Wi-Fi, UMTS and CDMA, according to DigiTimes.

Apple will ship about 500,000-530,000 units to channels in January with shipment ratio of Wi-Fi, UMTS and CDMA models at 3:4:3, according to industry sources, citing upstream component makers.

Apple is also working on strengthening the iPad 2's anti-smudge and anti-reflective treatments to compete with the Kindle and other e-Book readers.

The iPad 2 is expected to launch by the end of the first quarter or the beginning of the second and DigiTimes sources estimate that Apple will ship 40 million units in 2011, accounting for 65-75% of the entire tablet market.

Mozilla Developer Discusses Possibility of Firefox on iOS

No comments:

Mozilla developer Matt Brubeck comments on whether Firefox Mobile ever be released for iOS devices on Quora.com saying,

"We have no plans to release the full Firefox browser for Apple iOS devices. The current iOS SDK agreement forbids apps like Firefox that include their own compilers and interpreters.

Other browsers for iOS use the built-in WebKit libraries (like Skyfire) or do not execute any JavaScript on the device itself (like Opera Mini, which uses a proxy server). Mozilla could create a browser that did one of those things, but it wouldn't be related to Firefox in any way.

It's technically possible to port Firefox to iOS, and some people have done some work on that in their spare time. But unless Apple removes these restrictions, Mozilla will not spend time and money on this project. The development would likely violate the SDK agreement, and it would not be distributable to non-jailbreak iOS users."

This has pretty much been the standard Mozilla response; however, its interesting to note that some work has been done on the port. Currently, Mozilla's only presence on the iPhone is Firefox Home, an app which provides access to your desktop history, bookmarks, and open tabs.

Meet Folx 2.0 Beta Released

No comments:

It's been a while since Folx 1.0 was released and gained popularity among Mac users. Eltima Software has never stopped working on this project and was taking multiple user requests and wishes into consideration in order to create new innovated and greatly enhanced version of Folx - version 2 (in Beta now). Folx 2.0 Beta was released on December 23, 2010.

Those who buy Folx 1.0 since the release of Folx 2.0 Beta and till official Folx 2.0 release will receive guaranteed free upgrade to new innovated version.

One of the novelties added to Folx is iTunes integration. Now if you wish, all downloaded music and videos can automatically go to iTunes playlists named the same as the tag assigned to those downloads. The other great feature allows downloading files attached to some of your RSS feeds. Just add an RSS feed to Folx and you can either manually choose the files which Folx will download or you can set the parameters for Folx once and it will download the files matching the criteria automatically. You can even schedule your RSS downloads in Folx.

One of main Folx advantages is its files management system. It was renovated too. Now it allows creating smart groups that unite certain files according to the chosen parameters. Automatic tagging of downloaded files was also added to Folx. Now you can customize each tag up to your taste: set the needed parameters for each tag and when next download starts Folx will verify which tags correspond with this download and the corresponding tags will be automatically assigned to the file. As a result files will be saved to the folders matching the downloads in a most convenient way, so you will never experience any issue finding the downloaded content on your hard drive, even if that was long long ago.

Among other enhancements: possibility to choose file types that will be downloaded by Folx when choosing to download them in browser; possibility to prioritize files when downloading multi-file content; additional seeding options when seeding torrents and other catching things that you might want to try and will definitely like.

All in all Folx is 2 in 1 download manager and torrent client offered in two versions: Free and PRO. Free Folx offers essential functionality of a download manager and a torrent client: splitting downloads into two threads, auto-resuming of interrupted downloads, prioritizing download tasks, manual control of upload and download speed, etc.

Folx PRO is available for $19.95 (USD) and offers additional helpful and great features: splitting downloads in up to ten threads, scheduling the download tasks at the most convenient time, automatic smart speed control, built-in torrent search on multiple trackers with one click in Folx app, and more.

RIM Thought 2007 iPhone Was Impossible

No comments:

RIM thought that Apple's claims for the 2007 iPhone were outlandish and impossible, a former employee reveals.

Shacknews poster Kentor writes, "I left RIM back in 2006 just months before the IPhone launched and I remember talking to friends from RIM and Microsoft about what their teams thought about it at the time. Everyone was utterly shocked. RIM was even in denial the day after the iPhone was announced with all hands meets claiming all manner of weird things about iPhone: it couldn't do what they were demonstrating without an insanely power hungry processor, it must have terrible battery life, etc. Imagine their surprise when they disassembled an iPhone for the first time and found that the phone was battery with a tiny logic board strapped to it. It was ridiculous, it was brilliant."

Kentor notes that RIM's failure to foresee the future had alot to due with its background.

"Coming from a two-way pager background, RIM decided that phones should have two-way push synchronization of pretty much everything that Exchange provided along with a limited WML browser. The general thought was that phones would never have sufficient power density or radios sufficient bandwidth to allow anything more. That was incredibly predictably wrong, but it's how things went down."
