Microsoft To Rival Apple TV With Xbox Offering?

No comments:

Microsoft is preparing to rival the Apple TV and cable companies with a new subscription based TV service on its Xbox console, according to Reuters.

One scenario under consideration by Microsoft is to create a new TV service on its Xbox gaming console that would establish a "virtual cable operator." The service would charge a monthly fee for access through the Xbox to networks such as ABC, NBC, Fox, CBS, ESPN or CNN, according to two sources familiar with the plans.

Other options include allowing cable subscribers to use the Xbox to watch shows with more interactive functions. Viewers could, for instance, message with friends over the console while viewing their favorite shows.

Reuters sources said the service might not arrive for another 12 months but early discussions have been productive.

Web Browser for Apple TV is Almost Complete [Video]

No comments:

Firecore has announced that the upcoming Couch Surfer browser for the Apple TV is 80% complete.

There's been lots of exciting progress with Couch Surfer over the past week, most notably being fluid playback of HTML5 video. Couch Surfer is still a bit rough around the edges, but as you can see in the video below we're getting close. (Note: the pause in the video is just to showcase the control bar that is available during playback).

Take a look at the demo video below. We will let you know when the browser does become available.

Apple Stores Sold 8.8 iPads/hour on Black Friday

No comments:

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster reports that iPads were being sold at a rate of 8.8 units per hour per store on Black Friday, according to FORTUNE.

Munster believes this is in line with his prediction that Apple will sell 5.5 million iPads this quarter.

Munster also estimated that Macs were leaving the stores at 8.2 units per hour per store, down from 8.3 last year and 13 two years ago. "While Mac sales were flat y/y," he writes, "we believe it is too early to make a call on Macs in the Dec. quarter. Note that Mac NPD data in the first month of the quarter (Oct.) was up 20% y/y."

"Most notable in our observations we noticed that the iPad is gaining traction (driven by lower price vs. the Mac) among demographics in which the Mac has historically not been successful. The bottom line is that Apple's addressable market is expanding with the iPad."

Apple Lawyers Up for Upcoming Patent Battles

No comments:

Apple is lawyering up in its many patent battles with manufacturers that include Nokia, Motorola, Elan, and Kodak, according to a BusinessWeek report.

"These are very well-known, deep-pocketed, high-end manufacturers," said Lyle Vander Schaaf, an attorney at Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione in Washington. "Usually you have one 800-pound gorilla going after a new entrant. Here you’ve got 800-pound gorillas fighting each other."

Apple has been the most sued technology company since 2008 and Steve Jobs has been hiring some of the best lawyers around.

Apple has hired some of the nation’s top patent lawyers as outside counsel. They include Robert Krupka of Kirkland & Ellis, who negotiated a 2005 settlement in which Apple agreed to pay $100 million to Creative Technology Ltd., maker of the Zen music player; William Lee of WilmerHale in Boston, who successfully represented Broadcom Corp. in its fight against Qualcomm; and Matt Powers of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, who successfully defended the patent on Merck & Co.’s biggest product, the $4.7 billion-a-year asthma drug Singulair.

Each enemy kill results in an increase in money, which a player can use to purchase more power or new 'soldiers'. Each play level offers users a choice of easy, medium and hard gameplay and there is an additional option for true die-hards called, "Endless mode".

These are some of the features in Diet Defense HD:

Apple Gives iPhone Headphones Contract to Hon Hai, Cheng Uei

No comments:

Hon Hai and Cheng Uei have managed to snap up Apple's contract orders for iPhone headphones from Japan's FOSTER, according to a CENS report.

FOSTER has been the exclusive maker of iPhone headphones for a while. However, starting in 2011, part of headphones for iPhones will be supplied by the two Taiwanese electronic manufacturers, with Hon Hai making wires and assembling the device, and Cheng Uei producing cords, loudspeakers and control switch modules.

The switched orders are worth as much as NT$5-10 billion and will bring growth momentum for Hon Hai and Cheng Uei in the future. As iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad sales continue to skyrocket so will the demand for the headphones.

Cheng Uei will also supply iPad chargers for Apple.

Apple to Add Five New Features to the iPad 2?

No comments:

The Chinese Economy Daily News is reporting that Apple will add the following five new features to the iPad 2: video phone, better mobility, USB port, new display technology and 3-axis gyroscopes.

The video-phone feature (probably FaceTime) is expected to benefit Apple iPad's webcam suppliers, while iPad 2 may adopt smaller size panels featuring thinner glass. The USB feature will allow the device to be more connection friendly, while Apple's "Retina Display" technology will enhance image and color output performance. The 3-axis gyroscopes will enhance gaming, added the paper.

Recently Darrell Etherington of GigaOM published an article on The Street outlining similar expectations for the iPad 2.

Hidden API Enables AirPlay to Apple TV From Third Party Apps [Video]

No comments:
A hidden API to enable AirPlay video support in third party apps has been found by Steven Troughton-Smith.

The search began with Erica Sadun...

When Apple announced its new iOS 4.2 feature set, Apple TV's AirPlay video service really caught our attention. That's why we were particularly disappointed when 4.2 debuted on Monday -- only Apple's own applications could ship video from iDevices to the 2nd generation Apple TV; third party applications were limited to audio transport only.

Erica succeeded in posting the demo video below; however, Steven Troughton-Smith managed to fine a one line solution.

"Yes, it still won't be App Store safe, but it's jailbreak friendly, works flawlessly, and suggests only a single item that Apple could move to a public API to open up this functionality to developers. What's more, with a little screen scraping or off-screen layer manipulation and a clever use of AVFoundation, you can probably have games working out to Apple TV almost immediately."

self.movieController = [[[MPMoviePlayerController alloc] initWithContentURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:CINDY_PATH]] autorelease];
[movieController setAllowsWirelessPlayback:YES];
movieController.view.frame = self.view.bounds;
[self.view addSubview:movieController.view];

Hopefully we will see this being used in applications very soon!

ITC Agrees to Investigate Apple Complaint Against Motorola

No comments:

The ITC has agreed to investigate a complaint by Apple that alleges Motorola is infringing on patents asserted by Apple. The complaint was filed at the end of October in response to an initial complaint by Motorola.

--
The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) has voted to institute an investigation of certain mobile devices and related software. The products at issue in this investigation are mobile devices, such as smartphones, and their operating systems, user interfaces, and other application software.

The investigation is based on a complaint filed by Apple, Inc., f/k/a Apple Computer, Inc. Of Cupertino, CA, on October 29, 2010. The complaint alleges violations of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 in the importation into the United States and sale of certain mobile devices and related software that infringe patents asserted by Apple. The complainant requests that the USITC issue an exclusion order and a cease and desist order.

The USITC has identified the following as respondents in this investigation:

Motorola, Inc. of Schaumberg, IL; and
Motorola Mobility, Inc., of Libertyville, IL.

By instituting this investigation (337-TA-750), the USITC has not yet made any decision on the merits of the case. The USITC's Chief Administrative Law Judge will assign the case to one of the USITC's six administrative law judges (ALJ), who will schedule and hold an evidentiary hearing. The ALJ will make an initial determination as to whether there is a violation of section 337; that initial determination is subject to review by the Commission.

The USITC will make a final determination in the investigation at the earliest practicable time. Within 45 days after institution of the investigation, the USITC will set a target date for completing the investigation. USITC remedial orders in section 337 cases are effective when issued and become final 60 days after issuance unless disapproved for policy reasons by the U.S. Trade Representative within that 60-day period.

WARNING: Apple Has Put a Baseband Requirement on iOS

No comments:

Apple has created another roadblock for jailbreakers and unlockers with the introduction of a baseband requirement for iOS.

BigBoss relays the following information from Semaphore.

It seems that Apple has decided to put a baseband requirement on iOS. So at this point, if you are using Saurik’s server or tiny umbrella and trying to restore 4.2.1 on an iPhone 4, you will end up in recovery mode and tiny umbrella will not be able to pull you out of recovery. In this case, you will have to restore 4.1 again or you will have to restore 4.2.1 stock and be tether jailbroken. (Of course, I recommend 4.1 and not bothering with 4.2.1 at all). If you are an unlocker, this is a no brainer. Do not update to 4.2.1 even to test it at this point.

Foxconn Ramps Up iPad Production With New Chengdu Plant

No comments:

Foxconn has started mass production of the iPad at its new plants in Chengdu, China, according to a DigiTimes report.

Foxconn had previously refuted claims that the company would establish iPad production lines at the plants in Chengdu, but related component players have pointed out that Foxconn already started shipping iPads from the site in November and expected the site to become a major supply base starting the first quarter of 2011.

For now the plants only produce 10,000 units a day; however, Foxconn plans to setup about 50 production lines that would produce 40 million units a year.

Currently, most production still comes from Foxconn's plants at Shenzhen, China which are capable of supplying 2.5 million units maximum each month.
